A GoT comment: Most of you were short-changed by last night's episode. Partly b/c you couldn't see it as the directors intended. Why?

1) HBO's streaming service is, by far, the worst in terms of picture quality & bitrate. It'll look MUCH better on the eventual Blu Ray/4K Blu Ray
2) Shooting in low light is incredibly & inherently difficult. Detail and clarity suffer in the best circumstances. To combat this most directors now use artificial lighting for night scenes but at the cost of immersion. Subconsciously, your mind knows when it's being tricked...
...I applaud the directors' decision to err on the side immersion but it further compounds problems 1 & 3.

3) You don't have the right hardware. I have a calibrated 77 inch OLED TV and I had to make several picture setting changes just to make the viewing experience acceptable.
4) To truly appreciate last night's challenging episode, you need the right input AND hardware. The Blu Ray will get you most of the way. I've re-watched Seasons 1-7 on Blu ray(100 mb/s) and confirm it offers a major upgrade over HBO Go(10 mb/s). Even more so in low light scenes.
5) Another key reason they chose a night shoot: filming the battle of Winterfell took eleven weeks! Lighting conditions change day to day (Is it overcast? Partly cloudy? Clear?). You remove this variable when you shoot at night. Also, CGI shots are more forgiving in low light.
