The advice segment is great. Advice is one of my favorite writing genres, and a great one for students to practice. In fact, I put an "advice" experience in The Writer's Practice for just that purpose.
Students love this one. They have to practice both empathy and judgement and wield some power when figuring out how to give advice. Looking at other advice columnists is a fantastic rhetorical analysis exercise as well.

I’ve had TT endless preach to me about the necessity of NTT faculty acting in solidarity when tenure is threatened, but I’ve rarely seen that spirit extended downward.
Wrote this 5 years ago and got about 10 emails how unfair and over the top it was, that TT faculty were deeply concerned about adjuncts and I should appreciate the work they do. Phooey. Show me the lie in the post. insidehighered.com/blogs/just-vis…

These "explainers" with exhaustive detail about what the GA abortion ban bill says strikes me as exactly what those passing the bill want. It legitimizes it as a point of debate. This doesn't seem like a good way to stop the assault on rights. washingtonpost.com/health/2019/05…
The only necessary explainer is that these dudes are waging a war on rights with maximum possible cruelty and they're doing it because they think they have an SC that's going to take down Roe. They're waging war.

Just received a very special invitation to the Heterodox Academy conference where I can hear people such as David Brooks and Steven Pinker speak, which is great, because I feel like I never hear from those guys anymore. All for the low cost of $250.
Imagine hearing Steven Pinker, a guy whose work is highly invested in his own rather cloistered orthodoxy, lecture about the value of heterodoxy. I can't imagine a worse representative of the putative ideals of the organization. On the other hand, Pinker is a prominent academic.
I mean, I read the mission statement of the Heterodox academy and think, "I feel like I'm generally down with that," and then I see their keynote speakers and wonder exactly where I'm getting the heterodoxy because David Brooks ain't it.

For Jewish people—especially white Jewish people—who want to be allies/comrades with Palestinian folks, there are some things you all have to understand about settler colonial oppression and the trauma it creates. A thread, y’all.
Note that I am not Palestinian, but I am African American, and I know what settler colonialism does to its victims firsthand. While Palestinian oppression and AA oppression are very different, the trauma it leaves us with is similar.
First, imagine being told from earliest childhood memory that your culture isn’t real, that your people and your language aren’t real, and that the land that you exist on is not yours. Nothing that you own is yours actually, not even the clothes on your back.

I know that for listeners it feels like something free now costs money.

But for someone creating a podcast it feels quite differently.

@hearluminary We need some amount of money to produce the show--to hire staff, buy or rent studio space, etc.

Until now, that has meant finding advertisers or signing with a distributor who does the finding of advertisers.

@hearluminary Increasingly, that has meant needing to show an ad-selling network that your potential program can reach 100,000-plus listeners with a path towards 500,000 or 1M or more.

Here we go again. So much wrongness in this article, it's hard to know where to start.
1) Anyone who extrapolates IT electricity use to 2040 (or even 2025) is making a grave error. Things change so fast in this field that you just can't make predictions that far out.
2) Growth in data use/transfers (even fast growth) does NOT necessarily imply growth in electricity use. Our 2016 analysis of US data centers showed almost a doubling of computations from 2010 to 2014 while electricity use stayed roughly flat. eta.lbl.gov/publications/u…
