SSG Bill Chaney, B Co. 1/106th AVN, a Vietnam veteran, died of illness while serving as a Blackhawk crew chief during OIF. A professional instructor, Bill trained many crew chiefs to perform as fully integrated crew members.

On another personal note, I’ll add that many Vietnam War memorials don’t accurately convey the number of American lives lost; many died years later from injuries or illnesses incurred. My father died of Agent Orange related illnesses forty years after his deployment.

LT Thomas House died of injuries sustained in an SH-60B training mishap at NAS North Island in 1989. Lessons learned from this mishap drove changes to maintenance practices that made Seahawks inherently safer.
