For #ThyKingdomCome we've set up a prayer walk through St Mary's. Our theme this year is using the Bible in prayer. Throughout the church there are stations set up with resources for Lectio Divina.
We were inspired by running the @biblesociety's Bible Course over Lent. So we've set up the stations as a prayer journey through the whole Bible.
We start at the font with a chance to reflect on the first five books of the Bible. One of our texts is from the beginning of Genesis: 'and the spirit of God was brooding upon the face of the waters' #ThyKingdomCome
We're taking a moment today to reflect on God's love for creation and on our recreation in the waters of baptism and to pray for God's continued creation as we say 'thy kingdom come'. More to follow as #ThyKingdomCome continues...
The next station, for the historical books, is set amongst our tombs. There are passages for private prayer on faithfulness, calling, loyalty, exile, and courage. Today I'm meditating on Joshua's farewell to the Israelites (Joshua 24) and the many idols we make for ourselves.
Station 3, the Wisdom Literature, is in the quire Psalms have been sung and chanted here for more than 500 years. Today, I'm drawn to this line from Psalm 150: 'Let everything that has breath praise the Lord'. #ThyKingdomCome
It's so easy to focus on the negatives. I find that spending some time Psalms like 150 in prayer is a good corrective to this tendency. Sometimes the world seems dark, but the light overcomes the dark and all creation will one day join together in praise.
Passages from Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job, and Song of Songs are ready and waiting for you to sit with at Station 3 in St Mary's Priory! More to come tomorrow...
Station 4, the Prophets, is at the Jesse tree and window in the St Joseph chapel. Our focus here is on the promises made to Israel and fulfilled in Christ. #ThyKingdomCome
Of the passages at the station, the words of Jeremiah stick out to me: "I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God and they shall be my people" (Jer 31:33). May this be ever more true for all of us.
At Station 5, having waited expectently with the prophets, we come to the Gospels. This station is found at the collection of @jezthomasart paintings of gospel scenes and Fr Tom's corresponding poems. There's no shortage of material for prayer & reflection here! #ThyKingdomCome
Today I'm drawn to the Sermon on the Mount and, in particular, the beatitudes. I love how @jezthomasart's depiction of the scene shows the power of these words to restructure our world and our values.
We can see the kingdom that Jesus proclaims around us all the time if we look for it, but it is also not fully here. How important it is to be able to hang on to "blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted" as a promise from God for our futures.
