@1FreeInhabitant So, Edward B Clark wrote an article for use by many newspapers to shroud Edward Mandell House in mystery and praise in early November 1917. The following was from Woodson County Advocate, November 2, 1917 (Kansas):
@1FreeInhabitant House = Philip Dru: Administrator? (Book)
@1FreeInhabitant Even back then, 1917-1938, certain newspaper writers were trying to pain a pretty picture of House, but, why was he no longer a welcome guest of Wilson ... it seems T Benjamin found the answer. Be sure to check out and follow his thread.
@1FreeInhabitant Writer of article, Edward Brayton Clark, US Cadet, War correspondent (Dept of Interior!) son of Erastus Clark, US Postmaster, Fire & Life Agent, Utica City Recorder. Edward wed Eliza Frances Obee b in England, correspondent in US & Chevalier of the legion of honor of France?
@1FreeInhabitant Edward B Clark, occupation “editorial” for “Dept if Interior” per census, wrote many war & of war interest articles for Western Newspaper Union that went out to many newspapers. Often several of his editorials would take up a whole page, basically telling people what to think.🤔
@1FreeInhabitant Some of his work:
@1FreeInhabitant ?? ... the editorial writer on EM House, making House look mysterious in a very positive light. Again, Clark’s occupation was later said to be editorial for the Dept of Interior. Clark wrote many articles on the war and some DOJ interests. “Major Chemical Warfare Service”.
@1FreeInhabitant As I dug further, it got interesting, and also supported my theory that Edward B Clark was being used by an earlier DS to supply narrative and manipulate thought. Here is some of what I found:
@1FreeInhabitant 1) I mentioned that his father was a US Postmaster. That info comes from the 1880 Fed Census, where Erastus was found living with Edward who was 19 and a “US Cadet”. On the 1865 NY state census, Erastus was a “Lawyer”, and then in 1875 the “City Recorder” (Utica).
@1FreeInhabitant 2) But, the 1870 Fed Census listed Erastus as a “Fire & Life Ins Agent. I haven’t pursued his father, but may later. Anyway, back to Edward ... US Cadet in 1880. Most 1890 censuses were lost in a fire, so we won’t find him there.
@1FreeInhabitant 3) By 1900, this “former” US Cadet is a newspaper writer in Chicago, living with his wife Eliza (obituary said she was a correspondent) who was from England, his brother-in-law John Obee, architect or in office, and Edward’s daughter Frances.
@1FreeInhabitant War arrived by 1917. This is where I began looking closer. Why? Because of Edward B Clark’s headstone which said “Major Chemical Warfare Service”. We can look to Wickedpedia for some answers here...
@1FreeInhabitant “The Chemical Corps is the branch of the United States Army tasked w/defending against chemical, biological, radiological, & nuclear (CBRN) weapons. The corps was founded as the U.S. Chemical Warfare Service during World War I. Its name was changed to the Chemical Corps in 1946.”
@1FreeInhabitant “In 1917, Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Lane, directed the Bureau of Mines to assist the Army and Navy in creating a gas war program.” Another connection: Dept of Interior. The 1940 Census states Clark is a Journalist, and that his Industry is “Dept of Interior”
@1FreeInhabitant The 1920 & 1930 censuses stated he was a journalist, but left out Dept of Interior detail. Anyway, back to Wickedpedia: you will see 4 majors were deployed to France, but, as a major in this warfare. A later Passport application shows he was in France in 1917:
@1FreeInhabitant Back to Wickedpedia mention of National Research Council in regards to Chemical Warfare Service. See? “Under this three-academy umbrella, the program units produce reports that shape policies, inform public opinion, and advance the pursuit of science, engineering, and medicine.”
@1FreeInhabitant There it is ... in other words, under the National Research Council umbrella, Edward B Clark was a misinformant agent for the Dept of Interior. His job was to “produce reports ... inform public opinion....” As a newspaper writer, he was working for the Dept of Interior ...
@1FreeInhabitant ... Shaping public opinion about the warfare of the US and other items and people of interest such as E M House. Yes, way back then Government was issuing propaganda through our newspapers via [their] agents. This case was done under the umbrella of the National Research Council.
@1FreeInhabitant And, did you notice in my earlier research, Clark had another title mentioned in his wife’s obituary (1940) the year before he died (1941): “Colonel”. 🤔
