favorite moment of this afternoon was afterwards, when a few -- multiple! -- people with formal security and QA backgrounds came up and told me even MORE reasons to urge testing in prod. 🤗🥰
second favorite moment has to be at the end when I was marveling over my own moderation and self-restraint, and @lizthegrey piped up "I'm a good influence!" sotto voce, front and center. 🤣🥳

alright, now that I've caught up on a week of replies, there is something I need to address.

apparently "lots" of people are "increasingly unhappy" with me and my tweets lately. they didn't like my (or liz's) tone at monitorama, with the word "toxic" increasingly used about me.
I have sat hard with this, y'all.

It would be easier to brush off, but I don't think there's *zero* merit, and I don't want to be the kind of self righteous twat who ignores early warning signs of acquired sociopathy.

So here are my observations and a few considered mea culpas.
on the count of "yelling at people that they are dumb if they don't use honeycomb", I plead technically innocent -- but I can see how reasonable people could interpret it that way.

There was one tweet where it read as though I was shitting on intro talks. I quickly clarified..

we had nearly 60 people show up for the eng/mgr pendulum skill share, and it was phenomenal.

i have never had so many remote people beg to be included in an event before -- there is a real pent-up hunger for talking about what it means to be a senior contributor in tech.
it was unpossible to include remote folks due to the intimate, discussion-based nature of the thing, but i have not forgotten y'all.

i plan to write a "how to run your own skill share" playbook after velocity. and i will personally attend or help facilitate as many as i can. 🌈
massive thanks to @adriennefriend for pinch hitting as host, and @milesward for the pizza & ❤️ and @lanooba for awesome talk, and the many skilled and lovely facilitators and attendees who did the hard work of being vulnerable and open, bringing random topics to life on the spot.

.@gwenshap on running out of disk space: you can add more disk, or turn it off, change retention settings, and then back on.

the worst thing you can do is truncate the disk log with /dev/null while Kafka is running. Corruption!! #VelocityConf
@gwenshap When you're in a hole, first stop digging. If you don't know where the holes are, stop digging.

If you over-provision, upgrade to pick up bugfixes, feel comfortable asking for support, and don't "just tweak the parameters because"... you'll be better off. #VelocityConf
Subtle edge cases: if your disks are full but you discover it through an asynchronous flush... and it then crashes... and there aren't enough caught up leaders for quorum... data loss.

@aknin He works with teams to understand what reliability means, and then to quantify that definition.

This requires SRE skills, development skills, and product/project management skills. #VelocityConf
We should first start by defining SRE. Not all of us have the same definition!

Engineering -> using scientific principles to design/build things.
