IME this perception exists because (as I have repeatedly seen at clients) the absolute most junior people are hired as testers in order to keep costs down. Because they’re so junior they don’t contribute very much. 1/2

The “5x to 15x” cost of automation proposed by the OP fits with this model: median developer pay is around $150k US. A team of five devs then costs ~$750k annually (considering TC only here)
@alanpage 3/4 Glassdoor lists “QA Analyst” roles as starting at $18k US. I’m in NYC so this is lower than I’ve ever seen. Let’s assume QA roles start around $25k, which is just enough to rent a room and live paycheck to paycheck in NYC.

The cheapest QA analyst costs 17% of a dev salary.

Presidential elections, primaries, and candidates:
IMO we do not have a single bad Democratic candidate for President (counting actual members of the Democratic party.)
But they're all different. They have different strengths and weaknesses.
2. Meanwhile, there is only one Presidency, one job which all these different people are vying for.
No matter who wins, most of the daily requirements of the job will not change. Different people, same job.
3. So what we all need to do is evaluate which of these different people will, overall, do the one same job, better.
Since every living human has both strengths and weaknesses, that means we have to evaluate which parts of the one job are our highest priority, our biggest need.

Folks got mad at me when I tried to tell em about Beto. Read this. Sit with it. He spends so many words describing the problems in-depth. Saying he's gonna "work to fix them". But that HE doesn't think giving anything directly to black people is the way WE should fix it.
"Instead of giving you direct compensation, which is within our power, instead we're going to try to completely overhaul almost all of the deeply entrenched institutions in government. That's way better for you. Trust me."
I know a lot of y'all are still struggling with passing judgment on candidates just because they're white men. But that's not what's happening here. It's possible for a white man to do the right thing here. It's also possible to *know* that they won't. You just have to listen.

This theory is based on my own observation of the US after 8,5 years of living here. So: anecdata.

One of the things that strike me most about its largest demographic (white people) is their profound insecurity. Which this sums up quite nicely (link: slideshare.net/junlibradilla3…):
This is, again, purely observational, but I have never, in my life, had to manage the way I behave and speak more than I have here, lest my style and ideas cause literal tantrums in my interlocutors. Not in the UK, not in France, not in Spain... Nowhere more than here.
There have been, of course, plenty of exceptions. But by and large, the self-management required to deal with Americans is OFF. THE. CHARTS.

It all started when I read @mateosfo's tweet and then @currymel's story about a historic meeting in June where California's top climate and transportation agencies got together in a room—FOR THE FIRST TIME.
Californians will have to drive less to achieve our climate goals—1.6 miles less per person per day, in fact. But the people who are allocating funding for our transportation systems are still building more places to drive. curbed.com/a/texas-califo…
