I spent three months reporting what I have come to believe is the most critical issue that a majority of us—not just Californians, but all Americans—don't understand about our climate crisis. curbed.com/a/texas-califo…
It all started when I read @mateosfo's tweet and then @currymel's story about a historic meeting in June where California's top climate and transportation agencies got together in a room—FOR THE FIRST TIME.
Californians will have to drive less to achieve our climate goals—1.6 miles less per person per day, in fact. But the people who are allocating funding for our transportation systems are still building more places to drive. curbed.com/a/texas-califo…
But some leaders are getting it. I spent a lot of time with awesome folks in Sacramento and Davis learning how these two California cities are making it easy to get people out of cars and onto trains, buses, shared rides, sidewalks, and bikes.
This is a story about California, but it's not just about California. It's about decisions we all can make today to start building the future we want. curbed.com/a/texas-califo…

Researcher shares an op-ed claiming anti-vaxxers are worse for us than the migrant caravan (sure, why not)

Person responds arguing

Instead of seeing a teaching opportunity, researcher hits them with a, "don't lecture me," hailed for such a brilliant science communication move!
2/5 The op-ed in question also states we don't have enough evidence to assess if migrants are bringing diseases and therefore concludes anti-vaxxers are worse.

I think there is dishonesty on the part of the author to not bother considering the alternative
3/5 The biggest US pandemic of our generation arose in Mexico, and I think the fact that the article waves such an issue away as fear-mongering hate speech is yet again another reason why so many Republicans distrust scientists.

When I hear ppl saying that we need systems change and not culture change to address #climate breakdown, I think ppl overstate the ability of top down law reform to change culture. Law reform is not particularly effective and changing culture. 1/
Guess what - the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments did not achieve the end of slavery, equality, or the right to vote for African Americans. Slave state culture maintained near total African servitude, inequality, and vote suppression for a century b/c it was in the culture. 2/
Prohibition was written into the constitution. People did not stop drinking b/c it was in the culture, and the temperance forces didn’t give resources to enforce prohibition b/c it drinking really didn’t affect them except philospophically. 3/
