Today Boris Johnson promised "another 20,000 police on the streets". As Mayor of London, he announced a recruitment drive for 5,000 officers in London - without mentioning that these would simply replace staff lost through natural wastage. Officer numbers fell on his watch.

And as @FactCheck found a while ago, police numbers in England and Wales fell by 20,000 between 2010 and 2017. So today's announcement may not be all that generous.

We're going to see if there is a link between political donations and policy. Mr Johnson pledged to "begin work now to create free ports" today. The Bristol Port Company - which could benefit from "free port" status, gave him £25,000 when he was running for Conservative leader.

Today Mr Johnson said we would have the "extra lubrication" of £39bn" in the event of a no-deal Brexit. But experts warn that holding back the "divorce settlement" agreed by Theresa May could be legally problematic and create a huge diplomatic row.

Spending by councils in England has been rising in recent years - thanks to changes that give councils more powers to raise local taxes and a cash boost at last year's Budget - but has yet to recover to pre-austerity levels.
Every English region saw total council spending fall by at least 16 per cent in real terms between 2010 and 2017. Proportionately, London and the North East were the most affected, losing a third of their 2009-10 budgets.

I think that a Labour government led by Corbyn is the strongest bulwark the UK has against a slide into ultra-nationalist politics.

I also think for that to be the case at the next election (which might be much sooner than anticipated), certain issues need addressing urgently.
The 2017 electoral coalition which robbed the Tories of their majority was made up of regionally and socially diverse cohorts of people, with a particular divergence of political views regarding Brexit. I’m just stating the obvious here.
In the intervening 2 years, Labour’s leadership have had to deal with factors which have made holding this coalition together exceptionally challenging: a hostile media, the polarisation of the Brexit issue, and the strength of the new left in the grassroots but not the PLP.

We are about to enter the next phase of the Brexit saga. It is now more than 3 years since the referendum vote, and, with Boris Johnson on the threshold of Number 10, things are more unpredictable than ever. 1/
The new PM will be very different to the last. Theresa May had a keen sense of duty. She saw it as her responsibility both to deliver Brexit (as she defined it), and to protect the UK economy. 2/
Her faults are well known. She did not reach out or compromise until it was too late. She had precious little political imagination. She was, as many have said, and to the last, a PM unsuited to these times. See eg theguardian.com/politics/comme… 3/
