I think Hawley’s ridiculous attack on Berin is sort of a red herring. What he actually wants the gullible to take away is the idea that an “expert” is required at all. That there’s some controversy or disagreement among knowledgable people about 230 & neutrality.
But in fact, there is no disagreement among experts on this point. Hawley’s claims about 230 are either bald lies or represent an elementary failure to understand the law. Unfortunately, Hawley’s training really makes the former the only plausible option.
The level of contempt for his own constituency this implies is shocking. He’s effectively saying: “I know I can tell you black is white, and you dullards will swallow it as long as I pretend the uncontroversial facts are ‘what the left says’. You yokels won’t even look it up!”
