Here's one for you: A DEA agent got a drug trafficker to buy a $43,000 truck so the agent could seize it through asset forfeiture and use it as his work vehicle
Oh, some charges are for convincing the drug dealer to identify the wrong person as a major trafficker at a trial, and also for lying on the stand himself.

And 2 Louisiana cops are apparently wrapped up in all this for armed robbery under the color of law
Very cool, very normal drug war.
I poked around the docket on this case and found some other *interesting* stuff. Houston people might remember the DEA investigation of Rap-a-Lot Records

The will be ~today's thread~ on the FIRST STEP Act. Amendments will be debated and voted on today, possibly final vote on the bill a well.

Dick Durbin currently on the floor urging members to vote no on Tom Cotton's amendments, citing letters from crime victim groups.
Here we go. We're on to amendments now. Sen. Gardner now proposing amendment that would essentially legalize marijuana at the federal level in states that have done so
Sen. Kennedy, an opponent of the bill, now offering amendments. "Rather than try and fix [unjust laws] we’re going to give almost unfettered discretion to the bureaucrats and the Bureau of Prisons to fix our mistakes. It’s like putting paint on rotten wood."

Presents a good analytical technique for looking at society and how it affects you, plus a lot of worked examples on typical self-help topics. We do a reading group for this book and it's been very helpful for me.

"Focusing" is a technique roughly for emotional introspection. The book reads a bit culty but I've actually found it very helpful for improving emotional awareness. There's also amzn.to/2NLyV5H if you want more of it.

1/ I’ve given Junior something of a pass in this space, because I feel sorry for him. His desperate seeking out of paternal approval is so glaring that it is surpassed only by his father’s obvious & complete disdain for him.

The Trumps are a poorly-written TV soap opera.
2/ The irony, of course, is that his pa, President CAPSLOCK, is himself a worthless wreck, incapable of empathy. To seek Trump’s approval, to say nothing of his love, is to push a very large boulder up a very steep hill. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

They target black men most — with crushing consequences when life savings or a small business payroll is taken."
Black men represent 13% of South Carolina's population.

Yet 65% of all citizens targeted for civil forfeiture in the state are black males.

If you are white, you are twice as likely to get your money back than if you are black.

1/ Amid Twitter maybe getting rid of the "like" to promote "better dialog" and certainly giving safe haven to nazis and other extremists, a rant:
2/ You probably noticed how, people came forward to say that they'd reported the bomber for violent threats, and Twitter (as always) did nothing and (as always) now apologizes but (as always) won't say how they'll better handle. They won't, and I'll tell you one big reason why.
3/ to address complaints about threats and "improve the dialog" Twitter introduced the "quality filter." You see fewer threats and hate speech. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THERE'S LESS OF IT.

1. In my own #research, I have found Marx's notion of #contradiction particularly useful.

In his analysis, Marx noted how the contradiction between #labor and #capital accounted for many of the social dynamics of #capitalism.
2. The contradiction does not necessarily mean #conflict, but tendencies that "pull" in different directions and are in a dialectical relation to each other.

The contradiction of labor/capital can be accommodated in different ways and with very different consequences.
3. I like how this notions focuses on changing social dynamics. In my own work on #land use of #Mengen speakers in #PapuaNewGuinea, I've used the notion of #contradiction, to think about social forces underpinning Mengen land ownership and use.
