The Tang woman poet Li Ye 李冶 (730?-784)’s father darkly predicted that she would be a “unruly woman” from her precocious poems, and thus dispatched her off at age 11 to a Taoist nunnery.
Li Ye embraced her unruliness and became known for her poetic output and her love affairs
Only 16 Li Ye poems are extant, but traces of her exist in literary anecdotes & others’ love poems.

At the height of her reknown she was offered an imperial consort title, though she did not stay long at court. In 784 she was put to death for writing poems criticizing the Tang.
Li Ye 李冶’s extant corpus are love poems —but with bite.

The past few times I’ve spoken on immigration, I simply walk to the front of the room and start to deliver my lecture...in Chinese. (I’ve done this speaking on other topics too-incl to 200 1st years in the @DukeEnvironments masters program)

I wait to see who is willing to interrupt me, to suggest that I’m in the wrong classroom, or that I got a different memo about the lecture topic. Students who understand the language are usually beaming; I ask them if they’d be willing to interpret. Others are tuning out.

I do this to make my audience think about how language informs but also discomfits, how we always have differentiated access - and how reluctant we are to challenge existing power structures (here, the prof in front of the class)-

And, how migrants feel every single day.

The #WorldWar1 Armistice signing was enthusiastically celebrated in China, too - with street rallies, a military parade, and even a new commemorative gate. It might have been the "European War" 歐戰, but for many Chinese it held promise of redress for colonial invasion.

Wong Kim Ark’s successful case v the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the 14th Amendment’s stipulation that
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” 2/

On New Year's Day 2019, New Horizons will be sending back the first glimpses of a never before seen object, being a "cold" classical KBO. By mainstream science, these should have been orbiting at these distances for billions of years. 2/
The orbit of Ultima Thule is of low eccentricity - that is it is almost circular, and has no gravitational influence from Neptune or any other large body. At the distance it is at it gets so little sunlight that temperatures and time should have reduced everything to solid. 3/

@memcculloch #QI's idea of mass and inertia contrasts considerably with *the narrative* of particle physics. In particle physics, mass is derived from particle interactions with fields, and scales up from those subatomic processes. 1/
The models associated with particle physics (eg. QCD, the Higgs field and so forth) are derived from extensive empirical experiments. Logically, other models, to be considered, need to concur with the physical experiments. I think #QI is up to the task. 2/
It is not a trivial exercise to separate results of empirical experiment with the interpretation through the "eyes" of the prevailing model. One has to start somewhere and realise that if one particle's experimental results can be explained with QI, then all may be. 3/
