... what will catch people out is the punctuated equilibrium nature of such a change i.e. its exponential growth. Same happened with EC2, five years in (2011) and people were still dismissing it as irrelevant.
As I said about cloud, so I will say about serverless ... this is not an 'if' question but a 'when'. There will be co-evolved practices, there will be a billion dollar company that just produces a function, there is no choice.

A collective requires more than a set of universally useful principles (focus on user needs, remove bias and duplication etc) in order for people to belong to it. This requires a set of values (beliefs that are shared) ... values and principles are not the same ...
... the culture of a collective is described in its values, its enablement systems, the principles it adopts and its memory. It requires all of it ...
... terms like a "web 2.0 culture" or a "cloud culture" or "agile culture" or ... any collection of universal useful principles under a "meme" plus the word "culture" are meaningless.

Me : Why?
WL : A friends saw an advert on old peoples' TV that said "set your DVR".
Me : It means Digital Video Recorder, it allows you to record stuff.
WL : So you can play it back?
Me : Yes
WL : Because you can't watch it when you want to?
Me : Yes
WL : Does anything on Old peoples' TV make sense?
Me : It sort of did, long ago, before you were born, before the web etc. It's still hanging on, trying to make money from old timers before they croak. It's normal.
WL : and then it disappears?
Me : No, it ends up in obscure museums, places that profit from nostalgia and niches.
