One of these days we should talk about product placement and wanting actors to do advertising within the storyline without paying them. #SHOWMUSTGOON
A few years ago an actor was fired from a soapie for refusing to talk about a bank in the show. The bank had paid for advertising to be incorporated in the story but actors were not getting paid to talk about the bank. #SHOWMUSTGOON
Why must actors stand in front, next to, hold the product, talk about and even wear it for free? Dialogue is written for you to say something like, “let me go to Rami Bank cos they have low bank charges & excellent service!” #SHOWMUSTGOON
Why are big brands using an actor’s face for their product for free just because they sponsor the show? Pay actors their fees! #SHOWMUSTGOON
The biggest joke is when the brands want you to work for free then when they want to do big campaigns they get someone else who’s not even on the show- paying them huge ambassadors fees and flying them all over to promote the brand #SHOWMUSTGOON
If you start questioning the principle and your rights as an actor/brand you’re shown the door. A tv advert has a day/shooting fee AND a 300% usage fee per year. And you get paid again each year it get renewed. #SHOWMUSTGOON
Then there’s usage on different platforms- tv, print, billboards. Then you consider location- is it for SA only or all of Africa or the whole world? There 👏🏾 is 👏🏾 a fee👏🏾 for 👏🏾 that! Actors are sitting here with billboards in Germany without knowing- for FREE! #SHOWMUSTGOON
As an actor you’re not contractually obligated to casually hold that branded pen in a show without being paid for it. I don’t do free advertising. I don’t even do pics with a branded backdrop. For free? Aowa, I’d rather do like Johnny and keep walking #SHOWMUSTGOON
