One of my pet peeves is the way people react to every single thing a candidate says as if it is written in blood and binding for all eternity.

Just as an example, Warren announced she wouldn’t do big-money fundraisers. Some freaked out as if this doomed her for all eternity.

Candidates adapt and adjust. They evolve positions. They soften stances or even reverse them.

Not everything is a blood oath that signals the end of any rational adult thought no matter what happens or changes.

Using just that one example, if Warren’s candidacy was seriously harmed by her decision, it’s pretty unlikely she’d say “Well, gosh, I guess I just need to go ahead and lose now because of that decision I could easily change.”

The freak outs are tedious. And unnecessary.

In the Salem witch trials, witnesses looking to please a town’s domineering male elders lied under oath.

Had Roody Colloody been alive then, he would have been working for the perpetrators.
Fun-fact:

The Salem witch trials took place nearly 100 years before the ratification of the Constitution.

Impeachment of a president is constitutional.

The Salem witch trials were not.
In Salem, the innocent were put to death and the guilty went unpunished.

You have to love the irony of Roody Colloody citing a travesty of justice as an example of doing things right.

Okay, hear me out here because this is important.

Over here on the left, messages about military conduct have only so much weight.

We aren’t spoon-fed an endless daily diet of jingoistic faux-patriotic pap that conflates war and strength.

That’s a main course on the right.

We on the left don’t lean heavily on the Commander in Chief portion of a president’s role.

We aren’t attracted to the Mad Dog Mattis’ of the world. We don’t mythologize and glamorize the Pat Tillman’s of the world as if dying in a misguided foreign intervention is glorious.

In a million VFW halls across the country though, particularly in red states, a president is only as strong as his perceived leadership of our military might.

Presidents are generals to that audience.

That has worked in Trump’s favor - until now.

Up with the roosters for my son’s soccer game.

Playing at the field where he and I have spent so many hours over the years.

Just the two of us.

Baking in midsummer. Sweating buckets. Going out for Slurpies after.

Now, my little man is playing with the big boys. It goes fast.
We’d play, just the two of us and a soccer ball.

I’d jokingly push him off the ball and call it “playing European-style.”

Now he’s 11-yrs old, 80 pounds and mixing it up with kids a foot taller.

He has always been a kid you couldn’t intimidate. He takes no sh**. Fears nothing.
The single greatest thing about parenting a son at this age is watching the last clear fingerprints of your own influence fade away into who they are all by themselves.

Now, I just watch from the stands and smile.

A few times a game, he looks up at me and gives me a nod.

One of my pet peeves is the "a toothbrush is possession not property" discourse that has been entirely sustained by poorly skilled ancoms somehow failing to land easy blows on ancaps online.

It's just not an honest accounting of the concept of "property" or its usage.
In practice it's an incoherent and arbitrary distinction that inevitably sets off an endless array of quibbles and incredulity from those who haven't drunk the koolaid. Ot amounts to unnecessary gatekeeping "you must embrace this clunky alternative definition to be an anarchist".
What extremely online red anarchists are *trying* to do with the distinction is break apart forms of ownership that by some quality of their character risk compounding into runaway wealth hierarchies and those that do not. But there is ultimately no easy line to be drawn.

For today's #TenThings, let's talk about WRITING VIOLENCE, especially FIGHT SCENES. If you're writing any kind of fantasy, science fiction, urban fantasy, dystopia, or YA, there's bound to be at least one skirmish. So read up and do it right! TW for violence, obviously.
The usual disclaimer applies: YMMV, my way is not the only way, everyone's journey is different. This advice is intended for new writers of speculative fiction pursuing traditional publishing. Whatever works is your process.
1. Don't expect the first draft of a fight scene to be well written or have any impact. Just get the words on the page and fix it later. Much like sex scenes, the first draft is like blocking on stage. The emotion and power come in later, once you've got the basic steps in place.

One of my pet peeves is passive aggressive behavior. Someone acts rude, then when you act rude back, they get offended.

That's the Dem reaction to Trump everyday.
Has Trump ever acted rude to someone who was being polite and fair with him?
Telling someone to be polite, when they're getting attacked, is psychological warfare.

one of my pet peeves is online ordering systems that represent different pizza sizes as different "dishes" with toppings being customizations on that dish.
It means if you go to get a medium, customize it, then decide you want a large, you have to customize it again.
this seems to mainly happen when pizza places have to stuff their menu into a generic restaurant ordering site, but like pizza hut will just let you design a pizza and then swap the size around later.
"Honey, why did you tip 21% on this order? I'm not complaining or anything, you can tip whatever you want, but that seems a strange amount"
