@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson It is about vastly more than that. I'm working my way through the full text of the Bill now.

All these "security", "terrorism", "money laundering", etc bills have to be seen holistically in the bigger picture that the chain of their invention and passage presents.
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson PARTICULARLY in a country where the definition of the term "threat to national security" has been removed from the books, and where that term is now arbitrarily applied by the State without definition, a State which yet continues to pass legislation that invokes the term
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson My bad. That screen was from the 2007 amendment. Working through 2019 Control Orders revisions now.
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson This is surely at best, lip service - I can't think of a single security/terrorism bill in this decade which hasn't violated multiple principles of the BORA

We have warrantless data requests, warrantless domestic visual surveillance, secret revocations of NZ passports...
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson (and where entities such as the NZ Law Society, TechLiberty and others have illustrated viscerally those breaches, they've been largely ignored and the legislation has been pushed through regardless - often retroactively, after the fact of the practices having been employed)
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson Red flag #2: the continuation of the principle of prosecution-only type hearings where the defendant is not even notified of the action being taken against them, as with the secret revocations of NZ passports of persons who are alleged/purported threats to natsec
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson Further red flags - if people don't know what they're being accused of and the evidence isn't being supplied to them, how are they supposed to defend against it?

And this is at the discretion of the Police Commissioner?

cc @CitizenBomber
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson @CitizenBomber Red flag #3 and it's a major one - so what, we're now trapping people in New Zealand after they return?
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson @CitizenBomber Red flag #4 - under what circumstances could this possibly be OK?

What if the person is a journalist? A writer? A publisher?
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson @CitizenBomber Red flag #5: so now, without being arrested, charged with anything, able to defend themselves or even to access the evidence against them, they are subjected to house arrest and monitoring as if they HAD been convicted of a crime?

De facto convicted criminal sans due process
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson @CitizenBomber The giant elephant in the room here is not what China or Iran might think is a "terrorist" -

let's talk about what the United States might think is a terrorist.

Or the United Kingdom.

Or New Zealand.
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson @CitizenBomber Red flag #1483239:

This is ALL the Bill has to say about standard of proof? For essentially convicting someone without a trial?

"The balance of probabilities"

You have to be kidding me.
@golrizghahraman @MaramaDavidson @CitizenBomber And the icing on the cake:

People who are targeted with this aren't even allowed to tell people they are being targeted with this, without getting a court's permission to...

and journalists are gagged under threat of prosecution in the interim

What the hell New Zealand #nzpol
