Sentencing for Will Lewis happening now in Greenville County Court.
Brackett saying Lewis only was able to commit this crime because he had a spotless record when running for sheriff. Says you don't get a second chance to commit misconduct in office. Brackett says his lack of record is irrelevant for sentencing purposes.
Brackett giving examples of other elected officials who have been found guilty of misconduct in office. Brackett says Lewis is difference because he was "in power to deprive citizens of their liberties."

"Without her, the people of Greenville would still be suffering under this man." Brackett points to Lewis. He asks the judge not to compare Lewis to people who break into cars etc.
Brackett asking the judge to impose the maximum sentence of a year in jail for Lewis. "The people of South Carolina need to see their public officials held accountable. They are tired." He's now quoting the Bible asking "how long?"
Brackett is finished. Now Rauch Wise is making his case to the judge as far as Lewis' sentence. Wise now talking about his history of representing Lewis.
"I am glad I didn't meet the Will Lewis that is in those tapes. Because I might not have represented him." Says he wants to give back to Mrs. Lewis the man she married, not the man who was elected sheriff.
Wise saying Lewis is different than someone who uses their public office for bribery. Says the affair with a subordinate is something they will all have to live with. Wise says he does not "see any real monetary loss to the county in this case."
Wise saying the day the suit broke was probably the highest career moment and the lowest personal moment. Wise says that day Lewis met Trump at the airport, and while he was doing that his wife was at home listening to all the tapes.
Wise says if Lewis had been found not guilty, he would have been a better sheriff for it. Wise also saying that Lewis is "fortunate beyond belief" saying that there is forgiveness from his wife and children for his actions.
"His life is not to be governed by those five or six months." Wise saying he doesn't know where Lewis' head was at then. Says from his conversations with Lewis he understands how his actions put him in this situation and that he is the only one to blame.
Wise says this whole case is a more powerful message to elected officials than a jail sentence. Also saying there is a safety concern for Wise in jail.
Wise says he doesn't know of another misconduct of a public official case that has gone to trial.
Lewis' wife is now addressing the court. She says through the course of the last two years he's love their family and their children and has been "a great role model."
"He could have run and left, that would have been the easier thing to do." She says Lewis broke and confessed. She says she watched Lewis transformed before her eyes. Lewis hangs his head as his wife speaks.
She's now speaking about going through cancer treatments. Says it's because Lewis "showed up and transformed." Lewis appears to be crying now as his wife continues to speak.
"We are all people of change." Says Lewis knows great wisdom and that she met God through him. Says now God is using her to show him and the world what forgiveness looks like.
Says she doesn't think incarcerating Lewis will challenge him in the way that she will challenge him. "I know who the enemy is." Says it is not Lewis standing in court today.
Lewis now speaking to the court. He says he does not deserve his wife. Says he plans to speak with sincerity.
"I don't deserve the opportunity to have my family in tact." Says he is thankful because he wouldn't have made it through this without them. Says his integrity is absolutely tarnished and in question. Says he doesn't know if he has any integrity.
Lewis says the GCSO employees have individual integrity. Says he knows he's made it difficult on the deputies there. Says he has "just sheer remorsefulness." Says he is sorry for what he has done to lead him here.
"I idolized my position as sheriff." Says he put his faith in being a law enforcement officer. Says he now views things from a different perspective. Says he thinks he needs to use his knowledge for a good purpose now.
Lewis asking the judge to give him an opportunity for home incarceration so he can keep his family together and as much community service as he "wants to pile on."
Judge is speaking now.
Judge saying whether Lewis knew it at the time or not, he should have--that being a sheriff is not a part time job. "24/7 you're the sheriff." Says Lewis owed that duty to the citizens of Greenville County and his fellow officers.
"Money is not what you stole from Greenville County." Calls it a "so-called affair." Says he stole time and energy from the citizens and fellow officers.
Judge says he's never tried a case like this in his 20 years on the bench. Says he thinks regardless of the sentence Lewis' life is not over.
Judge says it's yet to be seen whether Lewis is sincere or not in his comments on doing good in the future. Says what Lewis took can't be repaid to the citizens.
