The arguments against Medicare for all and college for everyone always seems to be some variation on "I struggled so everyone after me has to struggle so nah." Which... sounds like absolute bullshit?
It feels so obvious to me that we could have a supercharged American society where we adopt some European ideas like a large safety net, expansive mass transit, combined with our own entrepreneurship and overall American audacity.
“Oh great I don’t have to have a job tied in to my health care and no matter my background I’m getting an education” seems like a recipe for a society where people are free to make the next Apple/Google/GM etc and generate wealth and jobs and happiness. The horror, I guess.
I feel like the solutions to most of these problems is easy and simple and we spend a lot of time arguing "no, it can't be that easy" when it it is. Just do it.
During the Great Depression a lot of old people died and suffered because they lacked money so we made a system where we simply took a small amount of money from everyone and now everyone gets a check when they’re old and Social Security is simple as fuck.
Feel like we're stuck between most Republicans who want everyone but a few rich people to suffer and a few Democrats who are so afraid of their shadows they don't want to rock the boat.
