One of the stupidest ideas among ‘conservatives’ is that ‘progressives‘ have a plan, that there’s some sort of diabolical route from ‘drag queen story hour’ to full communism (or whatever). They don’t and there isn’t. It’s all just part of the spectacle of the liberal regime.
‘Progressives‘ engage in their directionless activism to refresh and renew the liberal regime’s claim to ’freedom’. ‘Conservatives’ publish their essays and hold their conferences to register their disapproval in order to refresh and renew the liberal regime’s claim to ’freedom’.
Under liberalism, the left pursues novelty, whereas the right professionally disapproves of novelty (for awhile). Neither has any goal other than to present their work as an example of the unique freedoms they enjoy. “You couldn’t do THAT in China.” It’s all propaganda.
To clarify, there is a goal - to maintain and extend liberal hegemony - but every member of mainstream politics is part of that. The left is part of it, the right is part of it. There is no plan for one to achieve final victory over the other. The spectacle must continue forever.
If you subscribe to a doctrine other than liberalism, things are not going to go in the direction you want, but that’s not because one faction is winning and another is losing, it’s because you live under a liberal regime. There is no victory for you under its laws and norms.
The false idea that the spectacle of liberal democratic politics amounts to a genuine ‘war’ between opposing camps is one of the chief means by which liberalism exercises control over the population.
Even among those within broadly ‘dissent‘ politics, left, right, or weird, expressions of contempt for liberal democracy itself are often really just hyperbolic expressions of a position within liberal democracy. Part of the spectacle, rather than a genuine desire to end it.
None of the people you read in print or see on television or up on a stage are really on your side. They exist to trick you into thinking there are different sides, when there really aren’t. They all vacation in the same places, or want to. Only trust faceless Twitter personas.
