IMHO, the aforementioned five persons are probably the most brilliant musicians in #extrememetal.
Alex is obviously a geek. If he cut his hair short, he would probably look like a lawyer lol
Anyway, he talks in a highly logical fashion and did the best job conceptualizing #deathmetal -- it's simply horror movies rendered into music. He's also the main creative driver in CC.
Fenriz, tho he briefly flirted w anti-Semitism due to "mistakes of youth", was smart enough to distance from far-right politics while Varg was getting into it. And he really knows his stuff, making Transilvanian Hunger—#blackmetal stripped down to its bare essence—all by himself.
Ihsahn, AFAIK, was the first to introduce symphonic elements to black metal with majestic results. He was also the first to articulate that the extremity in black metal is about transcendence beyond the mundane. If you don't get black metal, take his words.
Mirai's command of English is very impressive for a Japanese person, and he has never even lived in an Anglo country. The avant-garde techniques present right from Scorn Defeat are also found in no other band but Sigh. And black metal still hasn't quite caught on in Japan!
I don't think I even need to explain Chuck Schuldiner. His composition and lyrics, especially in Death's later works, speak for themselves. It's problematic to categorize Death as technical death metal, because it's so much more than mere technicality.
