Thread about standing as a political candidate. It is not something I sought out. A few months ago I was, like many of you, watching the political game playing in Westminster with concerned interest, but with no vested interest../2

I was nominated for candidacy by local people who valued my knowledge of the rural economy and thought I had something to contribute. To say my nomination was a surprise is an understatement, so why am I standing?

3. Independent research shows that this constituency will be one of the areas hardest hit by Brexit. Our constituency, like the rest of Scotland, voted to remain. Yet the MP who has been representing us has u-turned and pivoted time and again behind party lines.../4

4. Our businesses and communities simply cannot afford the economic shock that Brexit will deliver. I’ve been a campaigner for rural Scotland for more than a decade. I cannot stand at the side-lines while our rural economy is decimated without speaking up.../5

5. This election is about escaping Brexit and preventing a hard right majority Conservative government. This election is not about independence. However you voted in 2014, if you want to prevent a hard Brexit and a march to the right, with all the worrying consequences../6

6. that will bring, lend me your vote in this election. As the volunteer Chair of Scottish Rural Action for the last three years it has been my privilege to speak up for rural Scotland in the corridors of power on a wide range of rural issues. ../7

7. For the past 18 months I’ve also served as a member of the South of Scotland Economic Partnership. I’ve led the Infrastructure group, focussing on how the new agency can improve transport and digital infrastructure.../8

8. Each candidate is so much more than their party. The individual values of politicians are being scrutinised like never before and in this time of unprecedented political change, scrutiny is a good thing.../9

9. What I offer the people of Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale is a promise of personal integrity and that I will always put my constituency first, no matter what.
