SCOOP: A black cop accused fellow Mount Vernon officers of robbing residents +using the N-word. They stayed on the force. He says his boss called him a “rat," endangering him within the dept. Here’s his secret recording:

5/ On the other hand, we also got a leaked police operations order from last month. It bars officers from making recordings without the Commissioner’s authorization.
6/ We spoke with NYPD whistleblowers + corruption experts who said the Sgt’s alleged comments could legitimately endanger him. One said they could “Serpico him” if they wanted to. Here’s our audio version of the story:

NEW: Our @theappeal/@theintercept investigation has confirmed that prisons in NY, TX, FL, & elsewhere have quietly built up databases with **hundreds of thousands** of incarcerated people's “voice prints” powering voice recognition surveillance on calls:

2/ In states like NY, prison officials confirm their new voice recognition program can even generate voice prints for **outsiders** called by incarcerated people, then mine recorded call databases to identify who outsiders have spoken with inside prisons.
3/ Some prisons/jails have made voice extraction mandatory for phone use. Others are conducting “covert” voice recognition enrollment. In both cases, incarcerated interviewees said they had no real choice and weren’t told their voices were being captured.

1/ In 2015, Adarius Sims fell asleep at the wheel. He crashed and was taken to the hospital. Cops noticed a gun in his car. He had a non-violent felony record, so he went to gun diversion court. But now, he’s facing federal charges for the same incident:
