NEW: Our @theappeal/@theintercept investigation has confirmed that prisons in NY, TX, FL, & elsewhere have quietly built up databases with **hundreds of thousands** of incarcerated people's “voice prints” powering voice recognition surveillance on calls:

2/ In states like NY, prison officials confirm their new voice recognition program can even generate voice prints for **outsiders** called by incarcerated people, then mine recorded call databases to identify who outsiders have spoken with inside prisons.
3/ Some prisons/jails have made voice extraction mandatory for phone use. Others are conducting “covert” voice recognition enrollment. In both cases, incarcerated interviewees said they had no real choice and weren’t told their voices were being captured.

This is a really crucial story because Palantir bosses keep lying to their workers and telling them their tech is not involved in separating families.

Every time a workforce raid happens, think about how that impacts a family: A parent says goodbye to their child in the morning and says "see you after work", that evening the child comes home, but parent has been taken away.

This is devastating for countless families.

Scoop: Detainees at the largest immigrant lock-up in the New York region, the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, were held in their cells for days earlier this month as helmet-clad officers swept the facility for contraband, @WNYC has learned.

Immigrants were allowed 10 minutes, twice each day to leave their cells and use the shower, phone and microwave, according to attorneys and detainees. County officials said this went on for 2 days for some. Detainees said it was 5 days. The impetus? Unspecified security threat.
The lockdown came days before the inspector general for Department of Homeland Security-@DHSOIG-released a scathing report about conditions, safety & security at the facility. Essex, which is run by Dems, gets $40 million a year to hold ICE arrestees. wnyc.org/story/abandone…
