@vgr 100 opinion challenge on opinions
1. Most people would benefit from actively trying to hold the opposite, or a variation, of their default opinion for a period of time. (Yes it is difficult but it is also possible)
2. Society would benefit if people took more time to consider an opinion before they blurted it out
3. In lieu of thinking before speaking one could take care to identify which of their statements are opinions and which they believe are facts
4. Most people have trouble differentiating between their opinions and facts
5. The fact that one has an opinion does not make that opinion factual
6. Most of the information we receive from other humans are opinions, not facts or even tested hypothesis
7. Few people take time to look inside to observe how their opinions are formed
8. We can change the way our opinions are formed
9. Some ways of forming opinions yield better results overall than others
10. If you ask most people how they formed their opinion they would make something up on the spot that is probably not related to how their opinion was actually formed.
11. Most people think that their opinions were formed “naturally”
12. Most people’s opinions are not their own.
13. Most opinions are not factually based
14. Most opinions are perceptually based
15. Most opinions are formed on the bases of self preservation/indulgence
16. Most people hold a slew of contradictory opinions
17. Rational discourse seldom sways opinion
18. Factual evidence seldom sways opinion
19. Lived experience can sway opinion
20. We would benefit from looking backwards at the mutations our opinions have undergone throughout our lives
21. By looking at how our own opinions have changed over time we may loosen our grip on our current opinions
22. The importance of opinions on our lives cannot be overstated
23. Opinions can be classified by placing them on spectrums of strength, frequency of occurrence in an individual and populations, scope, and impact
24. Opinions have fuzzy edges in the mind that are rarely explored
25. Opinions are powerful, they start as end wars, countries, institutions, and relationships
26. We cannot live without opinions, every action we take is based on some expected outcome (I.e. an opinion)
27. Long term rigidity of opinions is necessarily harmful to the individual and society. We are always lacking in information; refusal to incorporate new information leaves us at a disadvantage
28. Some opinions have an outsized impact on our lives, these opinions should be subject to the most scrutiny
29. It would be beneficial to keep a list/map of our opinions with dates corresponding to when the opinion was formed/last revisited
30. The way we frame facts reveal our hidden opinions (see: Trump says women have complained about inefficient dishwashers)
31. Activists (or SJWs depending on your opinion ;) would be better served by statements of fact than opinions (e.g. that joke hurts people vs. that joke isn’t funny)
32. Judging people based on their opinions is less helpful than judging them on how they formed their opinions and how fervently they cling to them.
33. Judging people is a process of forming opinions about them and is unavoidable (saying “don’t judge” is meaningless, replace with “careful with your process of judgment”)
34. Opinions are not news and don’t belong in newspapers
35. Opinions are like assholes, millennials gobble them up!
36. People who disparage others’ opinions using their own opinions, I don’t have nice things to say about those people
37. Worrying about others opinions of you is a guaranteed path to misery
38. Art/Culture/Food critics don’t have better opinions than anyone else
39. Forming opinions about people motivations is just speculation
40. Opinions only have value insofar as they affect the world
It’s late, I’m tapping out. Feel like meta topics don’t lend themselves to as many opinions
