Over the years we have discovered and rescued hundreds of URL shortening services that have gone off line. Hundreds.
Unless your use of URL shortening is accompanied by the long form in the metadata, or the short URL is to something on your own site, you are creating a one time cryptographic pad that won't last half a decade. Don't do it. period.
How many people have given thought to the fact that bit.ly Is a domain that is linked to a Libyan registry and could disappear overnight with a political decision there
Have we discovered that some shortener services reuse the URLs after a period of time? Yes we have!
If you feel that you have absolutely no choice and are painted into a corner for using a shortener, then use the Google one because at least then you're attached to a huge company that will do an export when they finally shut the service down
