A few of you may already know that I’m studying online fandom for my PhD project. Specifically, I’m using Harry Potter and Doctor Who fan podcasts to explore the ways in which they raise awareness about intersectionality. (Thread)
Intersectionality analyses the ways in which a person’s life is significantly better or worse based on where they live and on their social category (gender, race, class, sexual orientation etc.).

You can find details about my project on my PhD blog:
marginallyfannish.wordpress.com
More importantly (& excitingly!) I’m going to launch my own fan podcast. And I need your help! If you consider yourself a fan (either casual or passionate) of a particular book, movie, or TV show (or any combination of the three!) I would love to chat with you on the podcast.
It would help if you’re familiar with Harry Potter and/or Doctor Who, but you don’t have to consider yourself a fan. Our conversations will include YOUR favourite fictional world. And you don’t need to be active in online fandom.
Of course you’re welcome to participate if you ARE in online fandom – this podcast is just a different kind of fannishness. As my project consists of looking at fictional texts through an intersectional lens, I want to explore different intersectional themes in our conversations.
These include gender, gender expression and gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, disability, religion, national/regional origin, and age (though I’m very open to feedback on these themes based on which I will happily edit or expand this list).
I’m trying to highlight those voices which are marginalised or missing in media texts and within fandom. For example, as an Indian fan living in the UK, I rarely see complex representations of my experiences in most of my favourite texts or in fan texts.
If you think your experiences are invisible in mainstream media texts too, I would especially love to talk to you. While I’m largely focusing on Western media texts and fandoms, you may have a different perspective, which I’d be super interested in learning about!
My PhD fan podcast is inspired by fandom culture where I want to create knowledge collaboratively through conversations with other fans – where we can learn from each other’s experiences and perspectives. Which is why the podcast isn't going to feature just me and what I think.
If you’re interested in talking about any (or more!) of the themes through the lens of your favourite books, TV shows, or movies, please consider being a part of my project! You don’t already need to have thoughts about these themes – that’s what our podcast episode will explore.
If you already DO have thoughts about any of these themes, that’s great too! My project is open to all kinds of fans. I will record podcast episodes from January 2020 to October 2020 so we can schedule you in whenever you’re free.
For more information, please visit this page marginallyfannish.wordpress.com/project-inform…. It tells you about the purpose of the project and what participation will consist of. It has a lot of details about the participation process.
Once you read the details, you can decide if you want to participate or not. If you CAN participate, I can’t wait to geek out about fandom with you!
