The grand unified protocol for decentralized social networking is just not going to happen.

There are instead a ton of very niche social-oriented problems that decentralized tech can help solve (and that groups like @BriarApp & @OpenPriv w/cwtch are making headway on)
@BriarApp @OpenPriv But the vast majority of projects that are held up as examples in this space simply try to replicate existing models "but decentralized/federated" and are doomed to fail because...well go read the notes I linked too
@BriarApp @OpenPriv Hell some of the most interesting social problems are focused around deniable community building something that practically no projects in this space consider a valid risk model for "social media"

@BriarApp @OpenPriv I've been working on these problems with communities who could really use awesome censorship resistant stacks for years & the honest state is that the groups doing the actual work are chronically underfunded because no one gets rich decentralizing power.

It is 6:30 AM in Vancouver and not my usual wake up time, but there is exciting @OpenPriv news!

The main, big one is that we received a 1044 ZEC donation from @ZcashFoundation! !

In this thread I'll break down some of the research and initiatives this will fund.
@OpenPriv @ZcashFoundation While coffee brews, let me just say that that this donation was unrestricted and that this research was already underway because it is impossible to do any work involving privacy & marginalized communities without coming across financial censorship

Critical cryptographic vulnerabilities aside, @Scytl keep saying "mixnet server" as if that is an actual thing with meaningful properties and not a major vulnerability in and of itself that annihilates the concept of voter privacy in these systems.

Back to the decryption proof response. The defence is now that "we would have detected if there was an attack" which is grand when the main adversary these attacks focus on is the people telling you that you must trust they didn't exploit the vulnerability in their own system.
Either:

1. The math is such that only honest components succeed with ridiculous probability

OR

2. There are certain components which must be trusted to not fail for a fair election to take place.

You don't get to sell a system based on (1) and then fall back to (2) on failure

The quest for "usability" and, to a lesser extent, "security" has wrapped most tech in so many layers of prescriptive, over simplified interfaces that it has cut off the paths that used to bridge professional and casual tech competence, creating two distinct social classes.
Most have given a handful of corporations an unrestricted backdoor into their entire digital lives because the learning curve required to shape technology to their needs by themselves has started to resemble a threshold function.
And that has nothing to do with the complexity of the tech. Most tech has not gotten more complicated - in fact we have way better tools for managing complexity - but it's hidden, obfuscated & locked away to prevent people from fiddling with it..for "usability" and "security"

Time for some talk about The First Super Robot Wars Alpha.
Alpha 1 was published by Banpresto in May 2000. It was their first non-Winkysoft developed flagship SRW title.

A full Dreamcast remake was released in August 2001 featuring all 3D models. (As an aside, this remake was a precursor to SRW GC/XO in many ways.)
Alpha 1 marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. It was when the franchise started doing fancier animations and cut-ins, and for what I believe was the first time, it made all those animations optional and skippable.

Apologies in advance for the angst, but I was thinking too hard about what would happen if, early on, when Hank still very much hated Connor, Con got himself into a Bad Situation all alone.

Hank's at the bar, still trying to drink to forget, freshly pissed that he's forced
to work with his new android partner. No, not even that, because a thing /can't/ be a partner. Connor is getting on his nerves hard. They've clashed over their approach, over Hank's drinking, over Connor's stupid pushiness and manufactured innocence, as fake as the rest of him.
Connor mostly still struggles with understanding Hank, but he's growing to understand/himself/ a bit better, and he knows he's intrigued, and even likes Hank a bit, when he's not being an ass or ignoring Connor or the case they're supposed to be on.

He knows it's not mutual.

I don't have any doubt that the Libra team is building Libra for the right reasons: to create an open, decentralized payment system, not to empower Facebook. However, the road to dystopia is paved with good intentions, and I'm concerned about Libra's model for decentralization.
To understand Libra's technical philosophy for decentralization, this comment is a good point to start: github.com/libra/libra/pu…. Libra's 100 node closed set of validators is seen as more "decentralized" than e.g. Bitcoin, as Bitcoin has 4 pools that control >51% of hashpower.

Currently, there are 16 Asian American state legislature candidates set to appear on the 2020 primary ballot in California. 10 are Democrats and 6 are Republicans. Only 3 of them are challengers.
San Jose might end up having an Asian American state legislative representative in both chambers of the CALeg. The city's current Assemblymember is Asm. Ash Kalra, and Madison Nguyen has filed to run to represent the overlapping State Senate district — Senate District 15.
I'm pretty sure the current State Senator for SD 15, Jim Beall, is terming out and will be ineligible to run for that same seat again, which means Nguyen and other candidates for that seat will not have to battle the overwhelming effect of the incumbency advantage.
