Good evening, Twitterverse! We’re tuning into tonight’s #DemDebate. We don’t play favorites, but we need to know: Are these candidates ready to fight for full equality alongside us? Follow along!
Did You Know: In 2009, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled in our case that prohibiting marriage between same-sex couples was unconstitutional, making Iowa one of the first states to legalize #MarriageEquality. We ♥️ Iowa.
➡️ 12 candidates still seeking the Democratic presidential nomination
➡️ 6 of them participating in tonight’s debate
➡️ 7 questions that we need answered! #DemDebate#LGBTQlambdalegal.org/blog/20191010_…
We need to know: Do you support passing the necessary & long-overdue #EqualityAct?
⬇️⬇️⬇️
The Equality Act is bipartisan legislation that will make clear that federal laws already prohibiting sex discrimination ALSO prohibit anti-LGBTQ discrimination! #DemDebate
We need to know: How do you intend to protect young #LGBTQ people from abuse and discrimination? Queer youth deserve to be safe at home, in foster care, at school, in juvenile justice systems, and anywhere else. They deserve a candidate who prioritizes their security. #DemDebate
How will you address the epidemic of violence against #LGBTQ people, particularly trans women of color? Violence rooted in transphobia, misogyny, & racism must be treated as both a moral crisis & criminal justice issue. We deserve a candidate willing to confront this. #DemDebate
Do you understand why it is essential for #LGBTQI people to have the ability to obtain IDs that accurately reflect who they are? It is important that our next President places a premium on defending the dignity and worth of every person in this country. #DemDebate
Will you stem the flow of dangerous judges being packed onto federal courts across the country? 1/3 of President Trump's judicial nominees have a history of anti-#LGBTQ bias. We need a president to nominate FAIR judges & #ProtectOurCourts! #DemDebatebit.ly/2QUDgTH
We need to know: Do you think health care providers should be able to assert religious or moral objections and turn away #LGBTQ and #HIV+ people?
Will you commit to reversing bans on military service for transgender people & people living with #HIV? We need a President who will put science ahead of stigma, common sense ahead of animus, & who respects those willing to serve. #DemDebate#TransMilitaryBan
(Side note: We just won an injunction in fighting the Air Force’s policy of discharging airmen living with #HIV. The case is proceeding to trial. We look forward to proving that military service members living with HIV are as fit to serve as anyone else.) bit.ly/2Rm1kOk
Recently, a federal court ordered the Pentagon to turn over withheld documents re: the #TransMilitaryBan – including its purported justifications for the policy. Our fight continues. bit.ly/2RiP9lp
We are experiencing a very grim moment in our nation’s history. But make no mistake: No matter who sits in the Oval Office, we will keep on fighting until we realize our goal of full equality for ALL #LGBTQ people and everyone living with #HIV. #LGBTQ#DemDebate
Fun fact! Last year @HHSGov released a "Denial of Care" rule that invites health care workers to deny care to patients because of religious or moral beliefs. This is LIFE THREATENING. Anyway, we sued them with @americansunited@ReproRights. #DebDebatebit.ly/30tD2Gw
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT
.@SenWarren notes high prices of #HIV-related medications. Barriers on access to PrEP and other prescriptions, including financial and bias-related obstacles (like *cough* providers refusing to prescribe under the #DenialOfCare Rule *cough*), are DANGEROUS. #PrEPForAll#DemDebate
#DemDebate candidates are discussing racial justice, but we'd like to remind them that a platform on racial justice is not complete without a commitment to ending the rampant epidemic of violence against trans women of color.
Thank you @SenWarren for explicitly naming the violence that trans women of color are facing around the country! We can't dance around this. We need a candidate who will use all the tools at their disposal to stop it. #DemDebate
@SenWarren And that's a wrap on tonight's #DemDebate. We're disappointed that the candidates were not given an opportunity to speak on President Trump's assault on our judiciary. The unqualified judges that he has packed our federal courts with are appointed FOR LIFE. #CourtsMatter
@SenWarren Many of Trump's judicial nominees have been flat-out unfit to do the job. In fact, the only circuit court judges to be confirmed in 30 years after earning a "Not Qualified" rating from the @ABAesq are Trump nominees. #DemDebate#CourtsMatter
@SenWarren Here's why Trump's court picks matter:
➡️These (mostly white, younger, ideological) judges will be on federal courts for decades.
➡️Our cases will make their way into those courts.
➡️The fight for equality will, unfortunately, be adjudicated by Trump nominees. #DemDebate
@SenWarren@senatemajldr@LindseyGrahamSC That's it from us for tonight; thanks for following along if you did! We're looking forward to seeing if and how these candidates prioritize #LGBTQ & #HIV-related issues as we approach November. #DemDebate

This morning, Oral Arguments were heard at the Supreme Court, where web design agency #303Creative is arguing countless businesses should have the right to refuse service to same-sex couples, & anyone whose identities they disagree with.
Here’s what you need to know. (1of6)
This case is about whether businesses generally open to the public may refuse to serve some customers based on personal objections to who they are, contrary to current civil rights law. (2of6)
If #SCOTUS rules in favor of web designer #303Creative it could provide a license to discriminate against #LGBTQ+ people. It likely would profoundly impact the civil liberties of not only #LGBTQ+ Americans, but ALL Americans. (3of6)
If you or someone you know will be negatively affected by Florida’s proposed rule prohibiting Medicaid coverage for medically necessary gender-affirming care, we encourage you to share your story with us: lambdalegal.org/protecting-hea…
Our fight for fair courts and equality for LGBTQ+ people & everyone living w/ HIV depends on having a #SCOTUS bench committed to justice for all.
We applaud @POTUS’ nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson and believe she will strengthen the Supreme Court.
In this historic moment, the stakes are incredibly high for the LGBTQ+ community, with lawmakers across the country relentlessly attacking trans youth. We released this statement on why we have confidence that Judge Jackson will be the fair and impartial justice we need. ⬇️
“The country as a whole is entitled to expect that justices … will recognize the importance of ensuring that historically excluded groups—like the LGBTQ+ community and people living with HIV—can have confidence that their rights will be fairly adjudicated in a court of law.”
TX AG @KenPaxtonTX's opinion that gender-affirming care for trans youth is "child abuse" is not worth the paper it is written on. It’s not new law. It is beyond shameful for him & @GovAbbott to politicize the health of transgender youth for personal gain. lambdalegal.org/news/tx_202202…
We know this must be scary for caregivers to trans youth, and trans youth themselves. But we want to make it very clear that the law has not changed, and they are not alone. We are here to support parents, guardians, and the youth receiving the life-saving health care they need.
Although the AG’s nonbinding opinion should NOT interfere with medically necessary care, our Help Desk is ready to help anyone in TX navigate this situation. If you need resources or have an investigation opened against you, call our Help Desk. lambdalegal.com/helpdesk
Today, w/our friends at @EqualityILL, we filed a brief in support of Meggan Sommerville, a trans woman & @HobbyLobby employee for more than 20 years who has been fighting to use the women’s facilities @ her job. She’s been fighting for almost 10 years. bit.ly/3pecmEM
“Denying trans people the ability to use facilities that match their GIDs is not just dangerous … but an attempt to deny trans people full participation in society & render us invisible. Trans people exist; & we deserve to be treated w/dignity & respect.” -@AvataraSmithC 🔥🔥🔥
“Meggan Sommerville is a woman, full stop. Well-established state and federal law says so, but most importantly, Meggan Sommerville says so.” -@ethanboehmerice, Lambda Legal
That’s right! A little louder for the people in the back, Ethan! 🗣️
Lambda Legal attorney @oh_rarl said the athletes in the brief all, “recognize the value of inclusive and welcoming sports environments and firmly believe laws like H.B. 500 that single out groups of women and girls from participation in sports harm the entire athletic community.”
