As in the case of Cambridge Analytica, we have to realize that secretive shady shadowy donor backed privatized election management software can erode trust in democracy. We need an open-source public-certified alternative to “security by obscurity” in our political technologies.
Instead of asking for cash donations relentlessly the progressive movement should be begging for commits to a repo.
Think about how many people have the skills and time to build free operating systems, browsers, and encyclopedias. Why aren’t they able to build “political infrastructure” for elections? Because Citizens United privatized it. And Trump gave donors a reason to hide in the shadows.

If the extent of his crimes pertaining to the 2016 campaign/election and the vulnerabilities of our *election system* that paved the way for his installation aren’t on the public record or actively being mitigated by legislation, how won’t 2020 be just as fucked up as 2016? 🤷🏾‍♀️
People act like the cyberattack never happened and we haven’t already been told voter databases in multiple states were compromised and that something meaningful is actually being done to fix it between now and November 2020, despite all evidence to the contrary.
Mueller dedicated a large piece of his investigation specifically to election security & foreign interference but Congress still doesn’t have the unredacted report even though he punted the entire issue plus any/all legal consequences for Trump to them. Has that been forgotten?

Some worst-case scenarios on 2020 Russian election interference from @jonathanchait. They could happen; the Republican Party will take no steps to make them less likely to happen. A couple of things follow from this. [thread]
2. One should be obvious. Most Americans didn’t take Russian election interference seriously in 2016 because it hadn’t happened before — no Facebook ads, no stolen e-mails, no hacking of state election systems as documented by the Senate Intelligence Committee. None of that.
3. The Russian regime’s assistance to Trump will be a campaign issue in 2020. Putin, Fox, Trump, and every Republican backing Trump will be on the same side. The rest of the country will be on the other. The #MoscowMitch hashtag is just the beginning.
