When we use terms like “law and gospel” it’s important we define it. In the last few years I have asked women’s ministry leaders what law and gospel means.

1) the Old Testament is law, and the New Testament is gospel. ❌

1/
2) the law is the things God tells us NOT to do, and the gospel is what God tells us we MUST do. ❌

Titus 2 tells the older generation to teach the younger what accords with sound doctrine.

Women’s ministries rarely can differentiate law and gospel. They often focus on DO

The law is God’s perfect demands. It’s his heart for justice and picture of what is good and true.

We cannot fulfill it. We are too broken by sin.

The gospel is Jesus fulfilling the law in our place by dying for our sins that we may have fellowship with him.

When you tell a room full of women who in essence, make the church behind the scenes run, like the Mary Magdalene, Salome, Joanna, and the others who made Jesus’ ministry run smoothly—when you tell them that the gospel doesn’t have them DO anything, it’s incredibly disorienting.
Pastors, talk to the women in your church, the ones who do all the things, the Martha’s, the ones who teach the Bible studies, the ones who run the nursery, the ones who show up “because no one else will.” They need to hear the gospel. They need to wrestle with it.
