Weird, but when I was in the Army, going around the commander because you thought you had a better plan didn't make you a hero. It made you an asshole.

Of course, I served back when the Army won wars so my experience is clearly obsolete.
Alternate ideas include...

1) "Sir *closes door* you are making a big f***ing mistake and my job is to keep you from stomping on your d***."
2) "Hey Sergeant Major, maybe he'll listen to you."
3) "Hmmmmm. Maybe the boss knows something I don't, him being the boss and all, and maybe I'll shut my chili mac port until I have the the full G2 on the situation."
4) "When I'm the commander, I'll do it my way."
These are all fine options. What you don't do is spill info your boss gave you in confidence to embarrass him because you have a policy disagreement.
