He's not knowledgeable enough about film to have name-checked approving KKK epic "Birth of a Nation."
What I like about GONE WITH THE WIND is that the first half is about an insular minority whose entire worldview is built on human subjugation, so proudly convinced of the righteousness of their own evil they're willing to kill to protect it, and they get absolutely ruined.
The other thing I like about is the 2nd half is about how those people fail so entirely to learn from their deserved self-inflicted ruin, that they become selfish grasping people who drive away everyone close to them, left alone with nothing but their empty belief in themselves.
What I like least about GONE WITH THE WIND is that people possessing shallow artistic understanding and an inherited generational nostalgia for a lost age when wealth could be derived from human enslavement find in it ample grist for the mills of their nauseating imaginations.
As a person of extremely shallow understanding about all things, art perhaps most of all, it was of course to this that Trump appealed in name-checking GONE WITH THE WIND—this disgusting inherited nostalgia for a time when people could own other people like livestock.
As someone who quite likes much of GONE WITH THE WIND for its devastating critique of the south, the key scene for me is the one where Prissy makes a sly attempt to kill the baby, who to her is of course simply the next generation of a family who owns her body, generationally.
