Our unfortunate and sloppy habit of referring to health insurance as "health care" means that lots of people conflate nationalization of health INSURANCE with nationalization of health care SERVICE PROVISION. They're not at all the same thing.
Yes there are some people who think health care SERVICES should be government-provided, as in the British NHS. But "Medicare for All" isn't this. It's just nationalization of health INSURANCE.
Furthermore, there is no slippery slope here, where nationalization of insurance leads to nationalization of service provision.

Most rich nations have national health insurance but lots of private service provision. Britain is an outlier.

1/I've been thinking about this tweet. And more generally, about what the rise of Sanders means for the Social Justice movement (i.e. "wokeness"). Here are a few thoughts.

(warning: this thread will play fast and loose with terms like "Social Justice" and "wokeness"...)
2/There's a strong version of this take, which is of Bernie as an anti-woke Old White Man, who wants to ignore race and gender in favor of an obsessive focus on class.

That sort of take was common back in 2015-16, spurred by events like this:

3/But while I know a few conservatives who hope that something like this is true, I think this "Bernie as anti-woke reaction" take is pretty wrong.

The primary reason being that Bernie's young core supporters, while not always THE wokest, are fairly woke! And pretty diverse.

Yes. Just because you disagree with Saez and Zucman's numbers doesn't mean you're a corrupt shill for the rich. This is nonsense.

What are young people spending more on, relative to 1984?

Health, housing, and retirement saving. And to a lesser extent, education and child care.

A little surprised to see education and child care taking up only a slightly larger share here.
I guess only a relatively few young people go to grad school, and fewer have kids these days.

some random thoughts on the whole hard games/easy mode discussion that's been happening recently, from my own personal history of making stuff -
It feels like, from my twitter feed at least, that lots of people conflate easy modes with accessibility options. They are not the same thing!
It seems super obvious when you state it like that, but as a designer of action games, it's very easy to get them confused. I've done it, and I regret it. Not every game needs to have an easy mode, but every game can have accessibility options.

The term "platform" gets wildly thrown about, but from a backend/infra pov only one definition matters:

How much of your users' chaos are you inviting to live on *your* service for *you* to deal with, instead of on theirs?
Users are inherently chaotic entities, but the more flexibility and creativity your service allows, the more potential exists for users to generate unknown-unknowns that you will have to unpack and debug. And the more "platformy" your service is.
Like, at Parse we ran infrastructure for a million mobile apps. They wrote their own queries -- we just had to absorb the consequences, and try to protect them and their neighbors on shared replica sets. We let them write their own js functions -- we had to run those too.

1/ This is a ridiculous assertion and I'm going to tweet-storm here to tell you exactly why.
2/ Acting non-scammy, that is, being ethical, is not a one-time decision. You don't act ethically once and then get a free pass for the rest of your life. That's not how it works.
3/ Being ethical is something you have to do over and over again. It's actually pretty easy to be ethical when things are easy and there really isn't much of a price to pay to act ethical.

This is about the public's attitudes - how do they feel about extraterrestrial life, astrobiology, etc?
Interestingly 50-90% of people say "religion is somewhat/very important to our views about evolution," - 90% of creationists but even 50% of people who believe in natural selection.
