Capitalism says, "people are greedy."

Let's create a system for them to harvest the value they create while moving society forward.

Socialism says, "People are greedy."

Let's create a system to force them to share the value they create with others.

One system is stupid.
Hobbesian philosophy.

Man is self-centered. Show him how his greed and self interest coincides with societal interest and he will move mountains to move himself forward while moving the entire society with him.

That's the power of capitalism and the fatal flaw of socialism.
Socialism doesn't work because people are selfish and greedy.

Capitalism works precisely because people are selfish and greedy.

Can we find a middle ground that incentivizes value creation while caring for the "least of these"?

Humans are free moral agents.

We control most of our actions and reactions so its disingenuous to externalize the blame for our actions, "my girlfriend made me do it."

No, she didn't.

You did it. Own it, apologize, and move on.

Dad achievement unlocked.

I have somehow managed to convince my kids that campus visits is a valid holiday activity.

Done: Harvard, Yale, MIT, UT Austin, UGA, US Naval Academy.

Next: Unilag, Lautech, Witts, Kwame Nkrumah, UI, OAU, Strathmore (Kenya).
Why?

I want them to know that I fully expect them to get a degree from a good university.

No pressure. But good education is NOT negotiable in this household.
Sight activates dreams in kids.

That’s why books and travel are so important for children.

If you can’t travel with them, read to/with them. The books will make travel happen in the future.

Never try to negotiate with or rely on the word of those who have proven untrustworthy in the past. Verbal, written, or etched in stone, the commitments of people who have proven themselves willing to breach prior commitments are worse than worthless.
Are there unreliable people who "change" and become reliable?

Of course.

But the world is a big place and you only have one life to live. Do you want to be the guinea pig in an experiment of whether the individual in question is the needle in the haystack who has "changed"?
As Buffett says, it takes decades to build a reputation and a few minutes to destroy it.

That's very true, and everyone should remember it. Second chances are for movies and after school specials. In the real world, often there are no second chances.
