Emerging, blinking, from a week of #COVID19 service and ready to share some of my clinical/practical experiences. But first, a thread of appreciation.
Huge shout out to the nurses & PCAs: unflappable, cheerful and can-do. They took on additional work (like bringing food into rooms) without complaint to help minimize staff entry. And this despite the fact that most were reassigned from non-medicine services, new to the work.
Major props to the supply chain team, who are working night and day to source and obtain #PPE. We were never short on supplies (though every day it seemed a new type of gown appeared!) – though we have been using aggressive conservation strategies for the masks.
Thanks to the incredible lab team who got us our COVID results within hours, running 500 tests/day (soon to be >1500).
Thanks too to hospital admin, working to combat unimaginable demands with tremendous flexibility. Opened new ICU and/or floor COVID units every day. Repurposed, acquired vents. Created new EHR capabilities (order sets, flags, telehealth). Found disposable stethoscopes. Much more.
Thanks to our community: the outpatient docs who volunteered to staff the wards, the med students collecting and making PPE @ppe2nyc, the researchers helping us learn asap, the volunteers helping to call families, the surgeons covering medicine etc.
Thanks to my husband @EconDerek, who took on full care of the kids and their “school at home” for a week without complaint and with aplomb.
Lastly, thanks to New Yorkers. Every day, food appeared on each unit, donated by neighboring restaurants, families of staff, friends of patients and more. One day huge tubs of ice cream arrived instead – bonanza! Most importantly, people started to #StayAtHome.
