Today marks 100 days since @WHO was notified of the first cases of what we now call #COVID19 in 🇨🇳
Over 1.3M people have been infected & almost 80K have lost their lives.
This pandemic is much more than a health crisis. It requires a whole-of government & society response.
.@WHO's been working day & night to fight #COVID19 in 5 key areas:
-Supporting countries to prepare & respond
-Providing accurate information & fighting the infodemic
-Ensuring supply of medical equipment for #healthworkers
-Training & mobilizing health workers
-Accelerating R&D
Our focus has been on working with countries & partners to bring the world together to confront this common threat together.
We've been especially concerned with protecting the world’s poorest & most vulnerable, not just in the poorest countries, but in all countries. #COVID19
Although much has changed since we launched the first #COVID19 Strategic Preparedness & Response Plan two months ago, these five pillars will continue to be the foundation of our work in the fight against the #coronavirus.
I thank all countries & partners who have responded to our 1st #COVID19 Strategic Preparedness & Response Plan. Over $800 million has been pledged or received.
We’re all in this together and we still have a long way to go.
.@WHO will be releasing an updated strategy & revised Strategic Preparedness & Response Plan in the next few days, with an estimate of the financial needs for the next phase of the response.
For the past 100 days, our unwavering commitment has been to serve all people of the world with equity, objectivity and neutrality. That will continue to be our sole focus in the days, weeks and months ahead. #COVID19
Humbled by and grateful for the many expressions of confidence, trust and support for @WHO from countries during today's Member State briefing on #COVID19. This show of global solidarity encourages and inspires us to continue working day and night to save lives. #ProudToBeWHO
It was also encouraging to hear from countries who are focused both on ending the #COVID19 pandemic & on thinking ahead to ensure this never happens again. We need to break the cycle of panic & neglect to strengthen national preparedness, based on the foundation of #HealthForAll.
