Countries are asking ppl to #stayhome & shutting down population movement to limit #COVID19 transmission. These steps can have unintended consequences for the poorest & most vulnerable. I call on countries to ensure these populations have food & life essentials during the crisis.
My appreciation to Prime Minister @narendramodi for announcing a $24 billion package to support 🇮🇳's vulnerable populations during #COVID19 crisis, including:
-free food rations for 800M disadvantaged people
-cash transfers to 204M poor women
-free cooking gas for 80M households.
However, many developing countries will struggle to implement social welfare programs of this nature. Broad and expedited agreement on debt relief is essential to enable them to care for their people and avoid economic collapse. #Solidarity

To slow the spread of #COVID19, many countries introduced "lockdown" measures. But on their own, these measures will not extinguish epidemics. We call on all countries to use this time to attack the #coronavirus.
You've created a 2nd window of opportunity.
Aggressive measures to find, isolate, test, treat & trace are not only the best & fastest way out of extreme social & economic restrictions – but also to prevent them. This is especially relevant for many countries with vulnerable health systems. #COVID19
Although we're especially concerned about vulnerable countries, all countries have vulnerable populations, incl. older people. They carry the collective wisdom of our societies & we need to work together to protect them from the #coronavirus & to ensure their needs are being met.

The #COVID19 pandemic is accelerating. It took 67 days from the 1st reported case to reach the first 100K cases, 11 days for the second 100K cases & just 4 days for the third 100K cases.
These numbers matter, these are people, whose lives & families have been turned upside down.
Asking people to stay at home and other physical distancing measures are an important way of slowing down the spread of the #coronavirus and buying time – but they are defensive measures. To win the #coronavirus we have to attack as well.
We need to attack the #coronavirus with aggressive and targeted tactics – testing every suspected #COVID19 case, isolating and caring for every confirmed case, and tracing and quarantining every close contact.

We don’t know when our peak is. It depends on how compliant people are with #StayHome. If people are compliant at least through April, we have a shot at NOT needing more vents.

Because there's literally not one single moment when these radical ideologues aren't obsessed with how to control women--especially poor women and women of color--they found a way to use the #COVID aid package to expand the unjust and discriminatory #HydeAmendment. It's sick.
