Today marks 75 years since the liberation of the first Nazi concentration camp, Dachau, by US forces in the closing days of World War Two. #Dachau #Dachau75 #OTD #NeverAgain
Prior to the liberation of Dachau, Soviet troops had discovered extermination and concentration camps as early as mid-1944. British and Canadian forces entered Bergen-Belsen, in Saxony, and liberated it on the 15th of April 1945.
Dachau is significant, as I've noted in the video, as it was established just days after Hitler took power. Almost immediately, prominent socialists, dissidents and 'asocials' were rounded up for 'Schutzhaft' or 'protective custody'.
Dachau was no secret. People knew that it was a cruel and brutal place. A rhyme of the time went 'Lord, make me dumb, so I won't to Dachau come'.
In the early days of the camp, it was staffed by SA - Sturmabteilung, or 'stormtroopers', the Nazis longtime paramilitary. After a number of brutal murders, Himmler placed Theodor Eicke of the SS in charge. He brought order to the camp, but no less violence and suffering.
Throughout the years of the Third Reich, not only did the camp grow to accommodate ever-increasing numbers of enemies of the 'Third Reich', but also spawned a large network of 'sub-camps', such as those given over to Roma and Sinti, or slave labour. kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de/en/historical-…
I wrote about Dachau last year for @BylineTimes. As the global situation shifts, and fears grow in response, it's important that we acknowledge the beginnings of such places of horror. bylinetimes.com/2019/06/20/the…
