#gamedev #IndieOpinion

Just how absurd is #AssassinsCreedValhalla? Here's one example...
Honestly, Yanli would've been captured and enslaved long before she arrived in the British Isles, and even if she somehow made it, Eivor would've been just as likely to enslave and sell her, as Vikings often did.
We should all take a moment as well to reflect on her insistence that her story was not "exotic." She literally traveled from central China to the British Isles...in the 9th century.

Tutorial thread! 🌳
Sharing a very quick breakdown of how I'm making the vegetation for #AssassinsCreedValhalla. This is not much and I'm working on more detailed ones but I hope it'll help.
Can't wait to see your art!💚🌿

Following the recent release of #AssassinsCreedValhalla , now is as good a time as any to dust off the paper I did for @HistoryFestival in 2017, tracing the weird and wayward history of vikings in video games. Keep your hands inside the cart at all times; this'll be a bumpy ride. Image
Our journey begins back in 1982 with the release of 'Viking' for the TRS-80. Glumly hailed by its manual as ‘𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘺 the best simulation ever written for the colour computer’, the game lets you tread the perilous path of 8-bit resource management on the way to Valhǫll.
Although not technically a viking game, 1983's Ice Trek for the Intellivision - in which a 'legendary Nordic hero travels toward the isolated, sinister Ice Palace' - gets included for its choice boxart. 😁👌 ImageImage

¡Vamos a ello!

Image

Expanding on #AssassinsCreedValhalla Landmarks: STONEHENGE. Today, its theories!

(Refer to my PHASES Tweet for a deeper dive on the theories!)

Theory 1: It's a Burial Ground. Body remains were found in the 56 Aubrey holes. Why trilithons though?! Must have deeper meaning!

1/4
Theory 2: Stonehenge (SH) was built way before Christianity, so Pagans built them as a way to reach their Gods, towards the Heavens! (one-way
@assassinscreed can justify Pagans having a connection with the ISU)

Theory 3: SH has major primitive astronomical influence..

2/4
A. Pagan talent is marveled at to this day b/c they used trilithons & the heel stone for the purpose of perfectly predicting when Summer & Winter Solstice were at! 🤯

B. Not only that, but by using its stationary stones, they predicted Fall and Spring Equinox! 🤯🤯

3/4 Summer Solstice

Let's learn some History about #AssassinsCreedValhalla's Landmark: LINCOLN!

It was called Lindum Colonia in Roman times, the wall you see is Roman!

Danelaw gave Lincoln to #Vikings. (2) Bc of its Geography(3-4), it prospered in trade & crafts!(5-7)

#ACFacts/Theories (8/8)

1/8
🔲#Vikings invaded England in 865 & conquered East Anglia, Northumbria & Mercia, latter including Lindsey, which is the region Lincoln is in.

🔲 Struggle was made to reclaim, but the Danelaw signed by Alfred of Wessex & Danes divided 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, being 1/5 boroughs given to Vikings.

2/8
🔲Lincoln was a Goldmine to Vikings, because it was Geographically a GREAT Place for Trade to Prosper.

- It had ready-built Roman walls for defense. In #AssassinsCreedValhalla, you can see the rusted bricks signifying its old age.🧱

- River Trade routes around Lincoln.👇

Okay, so here's my deep dive into the #AssassinsCreedValhalla trailer, with all the stuff I discovered to geek over. THREAD. /1
The opening scenes take place in Norway, depicting the landscape that forced the Norse to take to raiding - mountainous fjords.

Relatively few 'Vikings' were raiders. However, agricultural space was at a premium and a growing population meant that some had to take to the sea. /2
The statue the hero, Eivor approaches is Tyr. He can be equated to the deity of war, victory, and an honourable warrior lifestyle. The Norse pantheon isn't always as binary as others. Existing depictions of him aren't the most common. /3

Listen, fellas, if you're bitching about female warriors in #AssassinsCreedValhalla, read up. In 2017, a grave was unearthed in Solør, Norway, containing a woman with battle injuries and a stack of weapons like swords, axes & arrows - and she's not alone.
Perhaps the most famous unearthed female Norse warrior was found at Birka in Sweden, in the 19th century. Last year, scientists reaffirmed earlier findings that the skeleton of a warrior, buried with sword and axe, was female.
Viking warrior women weren't alone at the time either. A woman found on the island of Langeland, in Denmark, turned out to be Slavic in origin, albeit buried in a Viking burial ground.

This #AssassinsCreedValhalla trailer looks super slick, but England in the late 800s had, like, *really not a lot to climb on top of*.
And the emphasis on "Dark-Ages England" feels a little too narrow for how expansive the Vikings ultimately were.

-B
And I'm SO CONFUSED because the baddies in the fight at the end REALLY LOOK LIKE BYZANTINES but they're 9th century English, im so wildly confused about what is happening here
I FIGURED IT OUT:
One emblem of the medieval house of Wessex is a gold cross with birds:
When you take that design and put it on a RED background it looks A LOT like a late-Byzantine cross.
No byzantines in sight, just a bunch of very weirdly-styled Wessex people.

What a mess Image

This #AssassinsCreedValhalla announcement is taking me back to my highschool glory days of wild speculation about new AC games. And now that i'm Good At History™️ I can actually speak with a modicum of authority about this.

So, "Vikings" is rad, but a little nonspecific...
-B
There are two big question marks around the setting: When and Where.
The Viking age ran from ~800 to ~1100 and they went out from Scandinavia to approximately EVERYWHERE.
Vikings wandered in 800s England, 900s France, and even started chilling in the Mediterranean by the 1000s!
So the simple choice of WHEN this game takes place — forget years of decades, just the *Century* — defines entire plot arcs that could happen: From the conquest of England or the settling of Normandy to the discovery of Iceland and even the damn Reconquista!
