The @AmerMedicalAssn's stance on Taking care of our students: Preparing for the 2021 residency application cycle.

So far.. lots of #medstudents attending this sesh
Most programs are considering #virtualinterviews

#MedStudentTwitter #MedED #classof2021
Lots of important stakeholders represented in the Coalition for Physician Accountability.

Next month: watch out for the report on pathways for graduating medical students (#class2020) and their journey to residency.

#MedStudentTwitter
"We anticipate stakeholders will commit to policies that prioritize these guiding principles yet recognize the necessity for innovation and flexibility in this new #COVID19 environment"
The recommendation is for the 2020-2021 academic year for "Away rotations be discouraged, except under the following circumstances"

#MedStudentTwitter
Recommendation on interviews: "all programs commit to online interviews and virtual visits for all applicants, INCLUDING local students, rather than in-person interviews for the ENTIRE cycle.."

#MedStudentTwitter
Recommendation on ERAS Timeline: "the delayed opening of ERAS for residency programs and a delayed release of the MSPE, and the opening and release happen on the same day." (Already in effect)

#MedStudentTwitter
Recommendation on general communications: provide consistency and equity for applicants across the country.

#MedStudentTwitter
"Both programs and schools should include statements about #COVID19 related training, testing, and quarantine requirements for any away rotations that are allowed."

#MedStudentTwitter
Away rotations will be extremely limited this year.
Rotations are critical.
Here's what's specific to #emergencymedicine:
Historically, 2-3 EM rotations for student, 1-2 SLOEs to interview, 2 or more to Rank.

#MedStudentTwitter
During #COVID19 pandemic, in #emergencymedicine, this has been revised:
1 rotation per student
0-1 SLOE to interview and rank
Weight to non-SLOE letters.

#MedStudentTwitter
Likely will have a SLOE format for non-EM letters as the framework. This will likely be available on July 1st.

There may even be the creation of #VIrtualEMelectives

Consider incorporating VR/AR.

#MedStudentTwitter
Now onto #virtualInterviews.. lowered barriers of cost/time.
Their application pool more than quadrupled! This is likely going to affect selection.

#MedStudentTwitter
More resources on #VirtualInterviews at the @AAMCtoday website.

For success, MUST consider equity, access, and security.

Emphasis on a unified approach to both visiting rotations and interview formats. NO away electives.

#Medstudenttwitter
#ImplicitBias|#UnconsciousBias will be prevalent during #VirtualInterviews.

Even a change in the background can influence perspective.

Educators must be intentional/deliberate about recognizing and addressing these biases.

#MedStudentTwitter
Emphasis on helping students make an informed decision given limited info with #VirtualInterviews:
1. online boards
2. talk to individuals at the school

#MedStudentTwitter
For those with no home rotations, how will these opportunities be prioritized?

Tough question. Try to secure a rotation in geographically close areas. Consider sending a letter of intent to divulge orphan status to individual programs. We expect challenges.
