One of the most common questions that I get, is one of the hardest to answer. "When will foreigners be allowed back into #Thailand?" No-one knows for sure as a decision hasn't been made yet. But, by looking at the facts and the timeline, we can make some educated guesses [THREAD]
I am very sympathetic about foreigners stuck abroad. I was nearly in their position. I had flown back to the UK to sell the family home in early March. I was following the news closely & decided to cut my trip short. I got a standby seat & returned to #Thailand on 19th March.
Things became very difficult for foreigners to return to #Thailand starting from 21st March. Any foreigner landing after midnight had to show a certificate to say they were free from #COVID19. This was almost impossible to get. I was so lucky to get back before this started.
The emergency decree started on 26th March. This closed all points of entry into #Thailand. However, there were some important exceptions. Diplomats & foreigners with work permits were allowed to enter with an easy to get fit to fly certificate. All other foreigners were banned.
Unknown at the time, the window for foreigners with work permits was small. A week later, CAAT announced that from 3rd April there will be a temporary ban on international flights to Thailand. It was supposed to last 3 days, but it keeps being extended. It now expires 30th June.
The only passenger planes that are allowed to land in #Thailand are repatriation flights with Thai nationals. Sadly, foreigners with Thai families are NOT allowed on these flights. This is because there is a daily quota and there are thousands of Thais waiting to be repatriated.
The only foreigners still allowed to enter #Thailand are diplomats & work permit holders. However, due to the continuing ban on international flights to Thailand and the fact foreigners are not allowed on repatriation flights, this means it's almost impossible for them to come.
What next? Will the flight ban be extended again? My gut feeling is yes because there is still a daily quota for arrivals. I'm told all repatriation flights in June are fully booked. So, still more Thais to be repatriated in July. The government will look after their own first.
Even if they reverse the ban on international flights to #Thailand in July, or allow foreigners on repatriation flights (which I think is unlikely), the only foreigners on the approval list are work permit holders. No-one knows when they will update this list. It may be months.
In conclusion, the earliest that foreigners will be allowed back into #Thailand is on 1st July. And the fact is, the only groups on the approval list at the moment are diplomats & work permit holders. People with other visas might not be able to enter until later. Then tourists.
