I caught a great #podcast from @EdgeWebRadio with @JoelKlettke on the value of a good case study, and the questions he asks.

I took notes, because these are great for case studies—and also ANY kind of interview!

“How to Create Effective Case Studies”

• Remember you’re there to listen, not to talk.

• Make the interviewee (the guest) the storyteller… don’t ask for opinions—ask for experiences.
• Ask: What was going on that sent you looking for a solution?

• Ask: When did you realize the old way of doing things wasn’t working?
• Ask: Why? Why did that matter to you? Why did you value that? As lots of “why” questions!

• Ask: What surprised you about that?

• Ask: What could have gone better?
• On results, ask: What did those results mean for you?

• Don't ask: Yes/No questions. They're dead-ends. Anything that can result in a single-word answer that can’t be elaborated on.
• Avoid questions about hard metrics unless you’ve given them a chance to research in advance, or to demure.

• Again, avoid questions that probe opinions, focus instead on experiences and stories.
