Joining our @CORD_EM Mini-Fellowship on Wellness Leadership is Dr. Jennifer @Kanapicki, @StanfordEMED APD, and @AAEMinfo BOD president giving a talk on "1440 minutes: Time Management Tools for the Busy Physicians"

#doctorsarehumanstoo #efficiencyinpractice #HeForShe
Understanding time management allows us to focus on ourselves and OUR time.

When execs are asked about what they value the most? the answer is TIME.

Check out some tips from Dr. @Kanapicki: blog.mymedutopia.com/index.php/2019…
1. Do an inventory of your time in a day
2. If you have 2 more hours in a day. What would you do with it? (this serves as a goal on what you can do better)

- family, more time with friends, time to be outside, time to pick up a new hobby, etc.

Invest 1440 minutes well.
Tool
1. Turn off notifications. We get at least 63.5 notifications per day! I know I get more than this with @ALiEMteam @SlackHQ! When you get interrupted, it takes 20 minutes for you to get back on your focus.

This allows you to do DEEP WORK.
How much do you spend on your phone for a day?
Your phone can tell you what your daily screentime average is.

"4 hours a day I am on my phone?!"

You want to be cognizant of what you want to spend your minutes on.

#phoneshaming
If you want to do #deepwork, be proactive, and NOT be reactive. It's your time.

Tool #2. Managing your Inbox

Notifications are addicting.

Email is REACTIVE.
How to control your email without it controlling you
1. No more email notification...!!
2. Unsubscribe. Check out @Unrollme. It's free. It helps declutter your inbox.
3. Think twice before you forward. If you send less email, you get less email. Think about the cc's!

#inboxzero
4. Use the subject line. Put important dates. FYI vs. Important vs. Answer needed.
5. Keep emails short. The longer it is, the less likely people will read it.

Done is better than perfect. <--@M_Lin! you just said a version of this today!
People think that emails are open 24/7. We don't send an email expecting an immediate response. It's more of an "urgent" and not like the #emergencydepartment.

Not good for time management.

6. Schedule your email checks.
Like your patients, an email needs a dispo. @TChanMD!
A good way to get inbox zero? ARCHIVE ALL EMAILS.
If the emails are that important, they'll resurface =)
At the end of a day, you might feel depleted. You need an MIT day and Calendar it.

"Most Important Task"

15 secrets successful people know about time management

41% of to-do list items are NEVER completed. Instead of to-do's, CALENDAR it!
Calendaring
1. Pick a night of the week to calendar. MIT is a MUST.
Put Me-time in the schedule like you schedule meetings--workouts, cooking, etc.
2. Schedule important things early in the day
"we're procrastinators by nature"
Most people are most productive the first 2 hours
Book your MIT earlier in the day.
3. "Time blocking"
Plan out what is your ideal week look like? Include meditation, checking the schedule, working out.. and really try to stick with it!
4. Treat schedule as if set in stone. SAY NO if people try to encroach in your calendar.
Getting Things Done (GTD) Method
--check out @OmniFocus. Whenever you have a great idea, create an endpoint instead of just putting in a to-do list.
--create action items and due dates.
--break down in different buckets.
--the app allows for forecasting for deadlines!
@OmniFocus can be an external brain.

Tool #5.
Have a morning routine.

exercising, eating healthy breakfast, meditating or journaling or reading.

1. wake up early. (even if you're not a morning person)
successful time managers wake up early.
Make sleep a priority!
You know how? You plan ahead. It's all about the night before. Planning the night out.

It means an hour before, you need to disconnect. Dim your lights, shut off your phone. Avoid looking at screens. If you must, switch to nightshift mode.

Read a book.
Think of what you want to look forward to in the morning.
Get out of bed for something you love.

You snooze, you lose.

71% of successful early risers do not hit the snooze button. Snoozing actually makes you more tired.
Exercise. Start small. even if it's just jumping jacks or a walk.
Eating a healthy breakfast.
Meditate. Get an app.
Being productive doesn't mean you're working more hours.
Make your time a priority. Make your sleep a priority.
Decrease cognitive load and use a bucket like @OmniFocus or your calendar.
Schedule an MIT.
Protect your calendar.
Calendar is set in stone. Say NO.
