#GoodNews? Hardly.
While a federal judge ordering the release of children in family detention centers by July 17th seems like a great move...there’s a small caveat many may have to be reminded of.

Last month, ICE began family separation 2.0, in which they gave parents the difficult choice of 1) staying indefinitly in detention w/their children during a pandemic or 2) separating families by only releasing children alone, to sponsors & keeping parents locked up.
“Family residential centers are on fire and there is no more time for half measures.”

This is what Judge Gee said, referring to the spread of #COVID19 in family detention centers. Because YES the virus has already spread there.
The thing is...
J. Gee can’t technically order the release of parents BUT she did make clear that ICE the ability to do so. It’s just at their discretion.

Which isn’t great news considering their track record and unwillingness to release people from detention before.
So as great as these headlines are to see and the amazing progress our Family Detention team alongside @aldea_pjc & Proyecto Dilley have accomplished...

The ball is in ICE’s court now which means it’s actually on all of ours to get families released TOGETHER.
So what can you do? Get LOUD.
This should outrage people just as much as the family separation crisis in 2018. Binary choice is no choice at all.

☎️ Congress & demand they push ICE to #FreeThemAll #SafeAndTogether.

ICE is asking parents to sign a form that would permit their children to be separated from them & released from detention, while forcing the parents to remain detained.

As lawyers work for their release, ICE’s unconscionable approach is both inhumane & unnecessarily evil.
Rulings under the Flores Settlement maintain that families cannot be detained for more than 20 days. To counter this, the Trump administration is “offering” families a binary choice: Remain detained as family or permit their child to be released to a sponsor & without the parent.
Parents we’ve spoken to told us that if they did not agree to their child being separated, the form claims that they "waived" their child's right to release.

The US has the highest number of #COVID19 cases globally.

So instead of:

ℹ️Providing accurate information to the public.
😷Ensuring frontline workers have access to PPE.
🏥Mass producing ventilators.
🔬Scaling up testing.

The president announced an #ImmigrationBan

Why?👇
Because when the administration mishandles a crisis, immigrants become the scapegoat.

Racism, xenophobia & misinformation are used to enact anti-immigrant policies.

The impact? Immigrants disappear from their communities, families get separated & ppl die in detention centers.
All while the real crisis is left unaddressed.

There is 0 public health rationale for an #ImmigrationBan—especially b/c immigrants are crucial to the nation’s response to the pandemic.

Immigrants are disproportionately in frontline jobs at hospitals, grocery stores & farms.
