I'd like to share a lesson in patient/client/child/person centered care by my neice & nephew after my daughter tripped in the park & scraped knees.
1. Niece asks: Can I help you with your knees? (A=Yes) 'tell me when you're ready'. Niece smiles.
2. Niece explains procedure
(Dabbing with wet paper towel) and adds, 'this may hurt a little but it's only water and its really important to clean it...wow, you're doing great.
3. Nephew adds: ' when I get hurt I like to think of happy things. Let's see. What is your favourite thing on the whole world?
*procedure continues. A distracted by thinking of her favorite thing*
4. Niece explains next step: 'im going to put on bandaids now so we can keep playing. Do you want to run up the hill after?'
5. Niece & nephew both provide encouragement A
6. Procedure compete. Niece checks in: 'how are you feeling? Let's take a sip of water' (A stops crying)
7. Neice continues: 'let's sit for a minute. Are you hot? I have an umbrella. Can I sit beside you and give you some shade? (A=yes)
8.Niece sits beside daughter & holds umbrella over her. Nephew stands behind. They sip on water bottles.
9.Neice and nephew both request me to play daughter's favourite song.
10. Play continues
11. They all run back to sanitize hands

I've can't remember a prouder moment
If only every interaction between a doctor or healthcare professional and a patient in need of care, no matter who the patient or what the hurt, was handled in this way with as much #respect, #dignity, #compassion, #kindness, #partnership #empathy & #humanity.
It will always be my goal to help ensure more interactions like this in our health care system.
