Good morning! Someone sent me a photo to ID last week and I thought it'd be a perfect time to bring back Wednesday's Weather Word (a subsidiary of #ScienceBehind)

Hard to spell
Difficult to say (at least for me)
And sometimes even challenging to see.

This sight is usually seen better around sunrise or sunset, due to the scattering of light during those times.

Anticrepuscular rays are often dimmer than their counterpart: crepuscular rays

The latter term comes from the Latin for "twilight". Crepuscular rays occur when sunlight streams through breaks in the clouds (some other objects can cause this, too)

Now i'm trying to figure out if I've been drawing the sun with crepuscular rays my whole life and just never realized it
Alright alright.
So what do anticrepuscular rays (or antisolar) look like?

A viewer sent me this photo from her friend. See how the rays don't converge at the sun? They converge at the "antisolar" point or the "vanishing" point

Let's talk a little more about this "vanishing" point concept.

If you draw two parallel lines out to a distance, eventually they'll look like they converge at this point. (Definition via @MerriamWebster )

Same for anticrepuscular rays

Think of train tracks... or two sides of the road.
The two metal beams of the track are actually parallel but appear at an angle. Anticrepuscular rays appear the same to our eyes.

Anticrepuscular and crepuscular rays may be seen connected to each other. If continuous, the two create a large, magnificent curve across the sky☀️

And that's it for this week's installment of Wednesday's Weather Word (a subsidiary of #ScienceBehind) !
