“Stand up fight back!”
And though the “out of your homes and into the streets” chant got swapped out a few blocks back, some neighbors are, in fact, coming out of their homes, and joining the march. Just saw two.
As @hungrybowtie just pointed out, the march route and the neighbors response makes very clear that this is, by and large, a march of folks taking to the streets of their own neighborhood.
Tear gas danger today: high
And just like that, the march is on Killingsworth, approaching the North Precinct.
Ticker tape, Dumpster Fire, and a UHaul trailer await the crowd as it arrives at N Emerson. Lady LRAD says Emerson is closed. Caution tape is down.
Yup. Those are technically thrown projectiles. Plastic water bottles.
And a photographer in an Oregonian shirt just withdrew because they were nervous about the LRAD identifying them by outfit.
The protester PA is pretty effective at drowning out the LRAD.
The shield line on Emerson and MLK, some paint balloons, and what are presumably, again, three empty police vehicles. The vehicles are further back than they were on Friday. A single egg sized rock just hit the hood.
Unlawful assembly declared. This used to make people jumpy.
Multiple roof cops. Hard to see.
Dispersal order to the south. Protester LRAD gives a counterpoint, citing domestic abuse statistics
Protesters are using this uhaul for cover. And now this cardboard dumpster. PPB has placed its vehicles next to the Boys and Girls Club vans, presumably also for cover.
Barricade doozers have now brought two flaming dumpsters to block Emerson, where police have typically begun their baton charges. However, LRAD ordered dispersal to the south, meaning they’re likely to push from the north, near Killingsworth.
Ok. There have definitely been some hard objects thrown. Possible hunks of concrete. A few have gotten close to the police vehicles which, again, appear unoccupied. A purple firework just went off near the Boys & Girls Club van.
The other obvious reason to move the 3 empty cop cars back in line with the vans: they are demonstrably outside of easy throwing range.
Ironically, the crowd seems pretty respectful of the declaration that Emerson is closed East if MLK. but less interested in the “don’t throw things” rule. Pioneers beyond the Barricade include Conehead, seen here.
A lot more things, apparently tiles, getting thrown generally towards the empty police vehicles.
An unassuming trash can fire is starting on front of the more established dumpster fire barricade.
Well, the barricade doozers have decided to move their barricade closer. And have decided to move the flaming trash can forward.
Riot declared.
The crowd seems excited? Notable that the PPB never declared a riot yesterday when out-of-state right wing extremists assaulted journalists, shot mace and paintballs, violated firearms laws, and pointed loaded guns at people
Shadowplay with @hungrybowtie and percussion
This is happening I guess. Awning next to the motor bay of the precinct on fire.
And teargas.
This is what I get for not having my goggles on. Note to self- lady LRAD doesn’t tell you when she’s about to deploy tear gas like DJ LRAD.
Bella Ciao comes around on the playlist. Crowd returns. Awning fire is out.
First push.
One arrest as the police withdrew. And then this M-80. Which was loud enough I turned off my video by accident.
Pretty aggressive arrest gets very gentle and considerate as media folks jog up. Officer replaces the arrestees glasses.
Police withdraw, crowd settles in.
Looks like at least 3 arrests in that first push. I was handed this lever from a grenade. The manufacture date is taped over, which is sketchy. On investigation, the sticker underneath says MFG 2020. So... not concealing old munitions at least.
The vibe is pretty chill.
Oops. That was the wrong video. The actual video with the big kaboom is this one.
“Every city every town, burn the fucking precincts down.”
Notable that the ppb has been very low-key with their push. No riot vans. The crowd is pretty un-ruffled, but the initial build-a-barricade/throw-tiles-at-a-driveway energy is now more of a “heckle and hang” vibe.
PPB just called this a riot again.
“This remains a riot” says PPB, right after I film this.
Yup. Riotous.
Dangit i was leaving and then two PPB sirens just went by. So let’s see what that’s about.
Well, I came back, Police had pushed a line across the street and arrested someone in the Mom Uniform (yellow shirt and bike helmet.) and get yelled at by a roof cop for walking to within 30 feet of a very slow riot line withdrawal. @PDXGabs is still on scene.
The grand saga of how I walked down a sidewalk, got yelled at by a roof cop for standing 30 feet from some cops in a driveway, and watched those riot police kick some trash. Riveting stuff.
Thanks to the friendly neighbor who chatted & offered me water just now. It was a nice counterpoint to the casual street harassment from a few blocks earlier.
Psa: if you make unwelcome comments about my butt, journalist ethics require me to let you know that you can fuck off.
To clarify: the thing at the beginning is the fire extinguisher. The tear gas comes with the loud percussions, the first of which comes right before the trumpet trill from Trumpet Guy
