I was neutral on this before but I am turning into an advocate for Tolkien That Fucks just to spite everyone who is melting down over the thought of some characters getting their mines explored
This is not a principled stance because I would go the other way just as easily if the situation were somehow reversed (“HOW DARE THEY TAKE THE SEX OUT OF TOLKIEN”)
like sure it would probably horrify the old man if we saw a few hot Cracks Of Doom in an adaptation of his work, but there's a lot of things that would horrify him that are objectively fine, I'm not bothered
also he said himself that elves had great pleasure in the act of begetting, I say we get to judge that for ourselves, see just how many """paths through Mirkwood""" there are
the above is a joke. I actually don't care. if it were an adaptation of the books I'd probably be irritated, but this is interstitial material and is basically gonna be filmed fanfic, so they were already guaranteed to dampen his pipe tobacco
there are adaptations I think I would be genuinely upset to see sex in, but they are all of literal children's books
not everything needs to have sex in it—and I'm not actually advocating for Tolkien That Fucks—I'm just not advocating against it
I've been set off here because the tone of the anger that I'm hearing is upsettingly familiar and shrill: declaring What Is Acceptable And Pure
which I heard enough of as a kid, when Tolkien was a little suspect because he wrote about magic
anyway we don't even know what this will look like in the show
what if it's a tender and loving depiction of consensual sex between married heterosexuals, missionary only, for the purpose of conception
this is another thing! a lot of people's righteous anger over Keeping Tolkien Pure ignores the fact that the books are occasionally quite violent, but that is more acceptable than the thought of Galadriel ""getting her Beleriand drowned""
another objection, which I haven't seen but I'm sure is out there, is from people on the ace spectrum who just don't want to see sex on the screen. that's ENTIRELY valid. my ire is for the people who want to keep sex out of Tolkien because it's Wrong and "against his vision", etc
