1995 or 1996 I randomly hear Nusrat is performing in #Seattle. Never been there before, but I book tickets and get the front row. Drive over and land up well in advance. He wasn't as well known then, the crowd is thin but dedicated.

He is quite large. He has literally to be lifted into position to sit amidst his musicians by two people.
He starts singing and you forget his size, shape, everything. It's sheer heaven.

I don't really notice him much. I'm clapping with the qawwals, singing loud with Nusrat to the songs I know..
But intermission. A few people mill around black tee. He ignores them. We're both sitting back, recovering from that mind-blowing set.
And then I realise. F***

Even back then, @PearlJam was a thing.
I look at him on my right. We nod to each other.
Lights go down, the second set starts.
More magic.
Later go backstage to meet the man. My doctor's daughter, who accompanied me, wants his autograph.

I drive home, some 200 miles, in silence.
Months later I hear Eddie's track on Dead Man Walking with Nusrat.
Then Nusrat hits big time. He's all over the news.

And then suddenly in 1997, I hear Nusrat does of a coronary. At 48.
Yesterday I thought I heard Eddie Vedder passed away.
As someone here corrected me, it was the other Eddie, Van Halen.
Small mercies.
