Adding one piece of historical context here: The massacre happened in early November, just after the election, because a pre-election campaign of voter suppression and intimidation was deemed by political and business leaders to have not been successful enough #ncpol
And it worked. After killing a bunch of people and forcing the elected town council to resign at gunpoint, the mob leader appointed himself mayor, and nobody did anything about it
Anyway, it’s good to keep history like this in mind when you see pre-election headlines in 2020 like this
Fired NC cop: “We are just going to go out and start slaughtering them f—— ni—–. I can’t wait. God, I can’t wait.”
That cop was on the force for years, and was fired less than 24 hours after a new chief took over. Wonder what has gotten hushed up before? portcitydaily.com/local-news/202…
He also talked about killing a black magistrate judge, as well as a black cop he worked alongside. And later got to fantasizing about a second Civil War.
None of the cops he talked to reported him. He just forgot that he was recording himself, and got caught in a routine audit
Wilmington is in New Hanover County, where an off-duty sheriff deputy recently led an armed mob in neighboring Pender County that allegedly broke into the home of a black teen they (wrongfully) believed was involved with a missing girl wect.com/2020/05/08/pen…
Organizer says a Raleigh cop came up and spoke with them earlier, very politely. If only every interaction was like that, she said, they wouldn’t be out here marching #ncpol#RaleighProtests
March starting. I count about 150 protesters. After this video, they’re now making their way up McDowell Street with a police escort #ncpol#RaleighProtests
Breaking(ish): Federal judge strikes down NC voter ID law for 2020 for being racially discriminatory
We knew this was coming, but not in such a sweeping fashion. And she struck it down for the entire election cycle, not just the primary #ncpol#ncganewsobserver.com/news/politics-…
The judge's 60-page ruling is largely dedicated to the history of racism in North Carolina, and "race-based vote suppression in particular.”
She is unambiguous, as you can see below, about the legislature in general and this law specifically. #ncpol#ncga
It's hard not to read this opinion as just bashing the SCOTUS decision in Shelby v. Holder that neutered the VRA. #ncpol
She mentions that case 9 times, and in addition to that screenshot above, she mentions the VRA more than a dozen times, in sections like this one:
Good evening from the North Carolina Senate, where they’re planning to vote on new maps to replace the ones rules unconstitutional earlier this month
The maps passed committee nearly unanimously but this larger vote might be more controversial; we shall see in a few #ncpol#ncga
In case you were doing something last Friday night *other* than following the redistricting process like us cool kids, here's my article from when the House passed their own maps #ncpol#ncganewsobserver.com/news/politics-…
Republican @RalphHise says the map/process "meets all the criteria the court has laid out and, quite frankly, should be a national model"
Democrat @DanBlueNC agrees: "I think it was a remarkable experience especially when you consider the current political climate" #ncpol#ncga
Breaking: The @NCSBE will not certify ANY new voting machines for North Carolina today. The board does not necessarily know who owns the companies (e.g. if the Russian/Chinese have any stake), and gave them til next week to divulge that. newsobserver.com/news/politics-…#ncpol#ncga
Board chairman Bob Cordle: "I believe this follows along with the cyber security concerns we have found in the Mueller Report and other documentation that has been furnished to our board" #ncpol#ncga
